what is this little chingez?

this is mounted on my frame rail, has a wire going from b- on controller through this box to a buss bar (i believe its a buss bar, my terminology might be wrong) in front of the batteries. can i use the buss bar for grounding my lights or should i come straight off the b- on batt #6?

That is the 16-12 volt reducer. Hook Neg side to buss block and Pos side to number five battery for 12 volts for lights etc.

right now i have a wire from #5 + to a fuse block for head and tail lights. this reducer was hooked up one side to b- on controller, other side to a bus bar with 2 other negative wires. so, should it stay on the bus bar and the other side of the reducer hooked up to a b- somewhere? or a b+ on #5? i hope this isn't confusing, i'm electrically challenged and some of this make sense, but this thing for some reason doesn't. the way this all came about was i was trouble shooting my lights, which, head lights worked, tail lights and brake lights didn't but i was getting power back there. so i hooked up a new ground wire from the tail lights to the bus bar and everything worked great for a couple days, then the wire from the reducer melted off at b- on the controller. i can't find a wire diag. that includes this reducer and lights and i don't want to hook it up wrong and burn something up.

I believe that device, is wired only to negative. It reduces the negative from 16 to 12 volt16 volt negative terminal, and the other end of reducer to that s. You do not hook this up to any positive.

So if you positive accesory wire is hooked to a battery positive, follow the that battery, to the next battery that is hooked in series with it, to the negative, so you have 16 volts between the 2 batteries. Then hook that reduced feed wire to that terminal block for negatives.

OK, let me try again. This reducer is set up to provide Neg connection for your lights etc. the end hooked to your controller b- is the same thing as having it hooked to your main Neg battery post. It is just on the controller to get the wires off the battery and reduce chance of corrosion of the connector. Also to ensure power usage is recorded by the OBC. You can see it has a black wire coming from each end of it. The other end connects to you Neg block where you hook the ground or better said Neg wire for your lights. The Pos side for your lights comes from the number 5 battery. This would give you 16 volts to the lights but the reducer steps it down to 12 volts. You should have the wire from the number 5 battery going to a fuse block where you connect the Pos for your lights.

ok, got it. thank you. its starting to make sense now. the other question i have, is why would that connector melt at the controller? and does it matter to have the obc read the usage? i ended up moving it off the controller and onto the main batt-

It was hooked up at the controller so that the OBC could measure the energy used by the converter into the equation of how much total energy has been used for re-charging.

If that connector melted it among others may have been loose or too much amperage has been pulled across it for too long allowing it to get hot.

That little thing is a high wattage resistor. 4v's are dropped across it. If you are pulling a lot of amps through it, it will get hot. It is made for the basic light circuit. If you have added any electrical options like a radio you should change it out to a 48 to 12 volt converter.
