Electrical questions (voltmeter and voltage reducers)

Thanks in advance for the answers. 2 questions.

1). I want to add a specific voltmeter; but it only comes in 18v not 48v like my pack (6 x 8v). Is it possible to hook voltmeter 1 up to positive of battery 1 and negative of battery two and repeat so that each meter (3 of them) reads 2 batteries in series?

2). I will need 2 voltage reducers (for head room / safety sake) for my cart. Should each one be wired back to main + and - of the bank or should they be wired in series?

A nominal 18v can be had from three 6v batteries in series.

Why do you want to use a meter so unsuited and worse yet 3 of them?

Keep in mind that during the charging process that your voltage may approach 65 volts meaning that if read in pairs that's almost 22 volts...

Also why do you need 2 voltage reducers for safety's sake?

Get a meter that can display the whole pack voltage! There are plenty out there. Scottyb has a nice one.

Actually we have 2 nice self powered meters that can handle anything from 12-100 volts with just a 2 wire connection.

To do it your way you would have to get 6 meters. It would be a little more work but you would be able to see at a glance if one of your batteries was going bad. You would also be able to see if your battery bank was balanced.

With 6 meters, you also will have to drive them with isolated power supplies since they cannot be referenced to each other!

Just get one of these for the cheap (Less than $20 everywhere). They work great and are easy to install. Check online, or through one of the sponsors, such as ScottyB or TahoeDawgZ71 (Revolution golf Carts).


Install the black wire to the - terminal on first of 6 batteries in series, and the red with, to the + terminal on the last of the 6 batteries. Note, if wired this way, it will stay on constantly.

you can alternatively, wire it to the key switch (this is how I did it), which will make the voltage meter only work when the key is in the on position. Wire black wire as listed above, and wire red wire, to side of key switch when on. On my CC, it is the top screw, I can look when I get home, and give you specific color code for your make and model.

I am pretty sure that these come with wiring instructions anyways.

I am a navigator and electrical engineer, who runs instrumentation and wires boat for the navy. this would confuse the hell out of me, and would be a bear to wire.
