From 8 volt Trojans to Continental XHD-31 12 volt batteries

i know these aren't the correct style batteries but was just wondering if anyone has tried these style batteries and if so what was the outcome. With all do respect would really like to hear from people who have actually tried this. These aren't your car batteries. They are the type ran in 18 wheelers and I have personally seen the abuse truck drivers have put on them leaving things on and running them completely dead and they always come back unless left dead and they freeze. I could easily buy 2 sets to one of golf cart batteries and probably close to three. I'm not a golf player and the cart probably only gets used 10 good weekends a year but when it is used we do a lot of off-road riding and even muddling. Just looking for opinions before I shell out close to or more than a grand for batteries. Our cart is lifted on 22 inch tires. All 4 gauge wires and upgraded f/r switch. Cart is 2000 DS series motor 48 volt. Thanks in advance.

First and foremost Group-31 batteries were designed as START batteries not deep cycle and even though they will take a lot of abuse they still are NOT built to "cycle" like a golf cart battery does. Also the 8v battery pack will out-preform the 4-12v battery pack any day of the week and many of us have taken our later model Club Cars and changed them over to 8v instead of the 12v for just that reason.

Do you have any experience using 31 series batteries on golf carts? I agree 100 percent that 6-8 volt batteries is the correct way to go but that's at least 900 for a set of batteries.

You can find T-875 Trojans a lot cheaper than $900. Unless you want them delivered.

One way to find out. Get a set and try them. I would like to know how they hold up. How long of a run time you can get. And how long they last before replacement.

Post the results for us and we can pass it on to others. Heck if you post the information it will likely come up on a net search.

My RXV that I bought last week came with Continenal 12V golf cart batteries, battery model is 2GC-1275, the continental spec sheet says that they are dual marketed also as Marine deep cycle batteries.

There is a chart at http://www.continentalbattery.com/ca...ine-rv?reset=1 which shows the XHD-31 listed as 195 minute reserve capacity and 950 CCA, the same chart shows the 2GC-1275 as 280 reserve minutes, and no CCA which makes sense as they are not starting batteries.

p.s. the wholesale dealer where I bought my cart sells a set of 4 of these batteries for around $700 new (he may have said $650+tax), he says he will beat anyone in the area on price, and buys a lot of them as most carts he sells are ex-fleet carts and he tends to sell them with a charger and fresh batteries as a package deal. Mine was the odd private party trade in deal, and the batteries were only 13 months old. It is probably not worth it for you to drive 6 hours to Louisiana to buy them, but it should give you an idea of prices you might be able to find.

Engine start batteries are designed to be kept fully charged by the alternator and they are not made to deep cycle. Yes they will do that for a while but not for many cycles. No I have not tried them. Our advice is to use batteries designed for golf cart use. If you want to try them - go right ahead. They will work for a while. Let us know how long they last for you.

The average start battery loses 1% of its capacity every time it deep cycles...given that number you will have approximately 40 use and recharge events before the batteries are shot...
