In need of some advice
New to the forum and this is my first post. I need some advice from the guru's here. I picked up my first golf cart ever the other day and have not a clue what I'm dealing with. It's a 96 Club Car DS 48 volt. I'm going to use this for hunting at night. Let me say right off the git go I'm not looking for speed. My question is as follows.....I'm using this hunting cart for Hog hunting at night, I want to put a 6" lift on it with 12x23" tires. Everything is stock on this cart, will I have a problem with it heating up and shutting down with the bigger tires. I have a friend who lifted his and when it runs a while it shuts down and want run until it cools. I will use this cart just on main dirt roads and fields to get to hogs, there will be no mud bogging or anything like that, that's why I don't need the speed, it's just to creep around and scan with thermal for hogs. If you could guide me in the way I need to set this up and maybe keep me from wasting money on trial and error I would really appreciate it.
thanks |

Welcome to the site!
How long can you run it before she gets hot and dies? On a side note, what thermal do you have? Do you like it? |

Re: In need of some advice
Creeping at low speeds can be the worst thing for these cart because it builds up heat quickly and can damage the motor/controller depending on what type of cart you have. Do you know if your cart is a Series or Sepex? You can find this out by providing the serial number located under the dash trim of the cart or behind the plastic insert that surrounds the steering shaft and houses the key switch. This will point you in the direction of which motor and controller to go with. For your needs I'd go with 2ga cables throughout and a HD FNR to help with the high heat demand that low speeds/creeping will create. I'd suggest a high torque motor from D&D. This will allow you to create tremendous low end torque to crawl about any terrain with the 23" tires and also keep the top speed pretty much stock. Check out Scottyb's website to look at his options for upgrading to your needs. www.cartsunlimited.net |

Re: In need of some advice
Just for comparison, I have an '07 DS with similar lift/wheel setup. Up until recently, I ran stock controller, wiring, FNR and motor for hunting on relatively flat mid-GA land. Have hauled 3 large adults and 2 deer out of the woods and across 1K acre tract with no problems. Recently upgraded 250A controller to 350A for purposes of towing boat uphill out of my backyard onto driveway. Otherwise I'd still be running stock controller. As already mentioned, "creeping" can cause heat-related shutdown issues though I've found that to be a problem only a couple of times in 3 years.

Re: In need of some advice
thanks for all the input.....sorry for the delay in response....just got back from a hunting trip for hogs. Ill try to answer the question in order 1st I have a ATN handheld and a ATN Thor thermal scope and love them. 2nd I have not had a problem with the cart, that was a friend of mine. I just was not sure if it was a coming problem since my friend had the problem. The serial number is A9616-495144. I have plans to upgrade the wires and don't want to sound stupid, but what does the HD FNR refer too. At this time I have not had it shut down because of heat just trying to avoid the possibility of it happening. I have run it for about 30 minutes around the house with no issues. thanks for all the input I really appreciate it guys.

Re: In need of some advice
Heavy Duty Forward and Reverse switch....there is also a solenoid pack that will do the switching from forward to reverse and I think it's a better choice...I put one on my 98 Club Car DS before I sold it and it was nice because you could upgrade to a rocker switch instead of the lever. Keep asking questions...this forums has some of the sharpest guys around and they are all willing to share. I have stepped up to a California Roadster for my cart but all of the running gear is Club Car. Good luck!

Re: In need of some advice
Was this cart born 36 or 48 volts?
That would make a big difference in what may be needed. |

Re: In need of some advice
Scottyb.....from everything I got from the previous owner it was a 48 volt. All I really want is to be able to get into and out of the woods from my hunting trips, I always go by myself and don't want to be a long ways away from my truck and have to walk.....you see I've got bad knees and not able to walk very far.....IN OTHER WORDS I'M OLD AND WORE OUT......LOL
thanks for responding |
