Brake issue, 2002 Club Car Electric

Hi folks, Im new to the site so I may ask some dumb questions.

I just installed some new trojan batteries and seemed to be having range problems so I jacke the cart up and find that my rear wheels will barely hand turn. I guess I have a battery problem. This is a little strange since I had the brakes worked on not too long ago. I am hoping there is something simple to fix this. Is there a spring that hold the brake off the drum in the normal position?

If the brakes seem to be dragging, back off the adjuster till the wheels turn free. They adjust just like a car. They must be free.

Also the new batteries will improve during the first 10 or 12 charging cycles. Be careful not to run them down too far during this time...15 minutes of actual run time and then recharge....

Scotty is it possible to back this off with the wheel on or must I take it off? I don't have a thin walled 13/16 so I'll have to get one to take the wheels off.

there should be an adjustment hole in the backing plate..... have you ever done this on a car before?

No. I've replaced one set of brakes and that's it. I know there is an adjustment screw but I'm really not sure how to access it. I've jacked the cart and the wheel barely turns by hand.

Scotty, thanks for your help. I pulled the wheel and the drum, took off the left spring clip, undid the top spring and released the shoes. I then adjusted the adjuster which was fully extended. Getting the drum off took a lot of work and patience since it was in full contact with the drum.

I'm not sure I have fixed the problem because every time I hit the brakes I hear the adjuster make another clink, tightening it up. You got any ideas on this?

It sounds like you need to adjust the pedal free play..

To properly adjust the brakes on late model Club Cars, you need to repeatedly mash the pedal until the auto adjusters stop clicking.. Then the pedal free play needs to be adjusted at the equalizer under the cart.. The equalizer is located at the end of the threaded rod that connects to the pedal.. Loosen, then back off on the rear nut until there is 1/2" to 3/4" of freeplay (measured from the top of the pedal to the floorboard) before the actuator levers at the wheel brakes begins to move.. If there is not enough freeplay in the linkage, the automatic adjusters will not operate properly.. The symptoms of insufficient freeplay is dragging brakes, and the adjusters keep the shoes adjusted too tight..

Your cart should look similar to my 1996 underneath.. In the attached pic, the equalizer is on the right side, there's also a pic of a properly assembled driver's side brake..

Thanks Scotty, your cart looks pristine on the underside. I'll give this a try tomorrow. If I don't adjust it I will soon be in the same fix.
