Light Bar Install
I have a 1989 Club Car DS. I'll upload pictures of it soon.
I'm looking to install a 32" light bar on it, but I am wondering what the best way to do it is? I could get a DC Converter, but they are kind of pricy. I already have a headlight kit on it with LED bulbs that I use without a converter. Also, should I use a light bar wiring harness or a regular golf cart light harness? Relay needed? |

Re: Light Bar Install
In that vintage of cart it's probably 36v? Most LED light bars only draw about 15a max so a relay is not an absolute necessity as long as you get a good quality switch like a Cole Hersee. Many led lights will spec a range of voltage so you have some flexibility...but depending on how long your going to run the light you are still better off using a voltage reducer because it keeps your battery pack balanced. When you draw power off a couple of batteries...those batteries will discharge lower than the other batteries in the pack and once they are out of balance its nearly impossible to get them back in balance and then your whole pack of batteries will fail prematurely. Been there done that...lol.

Re: Light Bar Install
You don't *need* a voltage converter. If you had one it would help by pulling current evenly from all your cells as opposed to just a few. If your draw is very small, it probably won't make a difference.

Re: Light Bar Install
You would be better off to get one that you can use for everything...that way you won't have any concerns for the battery balancing issue I listed in my earlier reply. If you get a 30amp unit from ScottyB or TahoeD you will get the type that allows you to wire it into your ign. switch...that is the best way. That way when the cart is off so is the converter. 30amps will give you plenty of power even if you decide to add a small stereo. Most guys wire the two 12v legs of the converter to a small fuse box with 4 or 6 connections. Cole Hersee makes one that has the ground connections built in to the same fuse box and that gives you the power and ground for everything right at your fingertips. I always put mine under the cup holder or in one of the glove boxes...then it's simple to run power to a dash mounted switch and pull the ground from the lights right back to the fuse box ground connectors. By the way I have found Velcro works great to mount the fuse box...good luck and don't hesitate to ask questions this forum is full of good ideas and lots of experience.

Re: Light Bar Install
Ended up purchasing this one. http://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/111266487778
It has a disconnect plug for when I am charging or not using it. It's rated for 15amp and 180watts, which should be just about right for my 32" 180watt light bar. I will have to get another one for my horn and factory headlights I guess. Right? |

Re: Light Bar Install
I don't know which exact light bar you have, but many of the ones in this size range will run off 36VDC

Re: Light Bar Install
I was planning on purchasing this one and mounting it on my roof.
http://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/201497420665 180watt operates on 10-32V. Should work perfectly with the converter I bought. Will be right on the limit though. |
