30 amp 48/12 reducer question
hey guys ...I have a madjax style (mj1230c) reducer that I installed not long ago to run a led light bar with an led lit rocker switch specifically for the led light bar and I have the green switched wire ran from the reducer to the key switch so that it will only get power when the switch is in the on position and I just noticed that the reducer is warm to the touch even with the key switch turned off and with the tow/run off at the same time and the cart hasn't been ran in days . I didn't think the reducer would get power without the key switch being in the on position, I think its wired correctly because the led lit rocker switch will not power up nor will the led light work unless I have the key switch in the on position, plus I can hear the relay that is used in the wiring harness for the led light bar click when I turn the key switch on. is this normal for the reducer to still be warm ? its not very warm but you can tell its getting power as everything else on that cart is cold to the touch , I don't see much if any battery draw as I unplugged my battery maintainer and my cart is at 53.0 volts even 12 hours after I unplugged the maintainer. Any ideas ? Thanks

Re: 30 amp 48/12 reducer question
The Madjax converter also has a "always ON" 12v output (blue wire) used for radios or other accessories that need constant power.
As long as it is connected to the battery pack, some of the converter electronic circuits are always working. Quote:

Re: 30 amp 48/12 reducer question
Many of the less expensive reducers are designed to stay on all the time and don't use any power until there is demand even though they are 'on' all the time.

Search for power stream 4812 reducer.

Re: 30 amp 48/12 reducer question
The DC converters that have a "trigger" wire and just "switched" 12v output power, when OFF, only use a very small amount of current to keep the internal filter capacitors charged.
When the "trigger" wire gets 48v, then the switched output circuit is activated and it consumes more current. |

Re: 30 amp 48/12 reducer question
Some here are all about having a "switched" converter that you can "turn off".
Others don't care if it's switched or not because the converter doesn't even use a 1/10th of an amp when not having a current drawn upon it. I personally fall in the latter camp. I could not care less if it's switchable. Even with the small current drawn from a radio unit when not in use, it's not enough electricity usage to be concerned about. |

Re: 30 amp 48/12 reducer question
I think one of the reasons folks like the units with the "trigger" wire is the convenience of turning all of the accessories OFF using the key switch (without adding an additional relay).
