Default Checking batteries

When should you check the water in the batteries? Can you check them while they are charging, our should you disconnect and let them cool down? What about after riding in the cart?

Batteries need to be watered after charging unless the water is vey low exposing the plates of the battery then you need to add water to just cover the plates. Then after charging you can use the cart and check the water later or wait until the batteries cool down after charging...usually a couple of hours and then water. If you live in a hot climate like Arizona you may have to water every couple of weeks. Older batteries tend to use more water...newer batteries use less if you have gone through the new battery charging procedure listed in the "sticky" at the top of the page entitled: "Everything you ever wanted to know about batteries"

Check them after charging. If you fill prior to charging you risk them overflowing when gassing. After charging make sure the plates are covered 1/8" - 1/4" but don't overfill.

Is there something to stick down into the battery to check the water level? For me it's hard to tell just looking down into the cell. Is it safe to put a small piece of wood (clean) into the hole to check it?

You wouldn't want to put anything in there that the acid could attack.
