Default ? about fnr switch

I have a 99 ds that hasn't run in reverse for the past two years and now I've lost forward. I currently have continuity with the lever in the forward position but not in the reverse position. No sound from the buzzer in several yrs. 48 volts, 7 yr. old energizers, with the weakest battery at 8.41 strongest at 8.46 after it was driven around 3/4 of a mile. Solenoid clicks in forward and reverse. Do fnr switches normally fail in this manner or do they normally fail all together (no forward or reverse)?

The internal mechanism can fail for only one of the settings (F or R).

For a DCS cart this scenario is usually a controller failure.

Checked the controller today.
No voltage across the activating post on solenoid
.4 volts between B- and 1 on controller
48 volts between B+ and M-

You can move on big solenoid cable so the 2 big cables are on one post. This essentially bypasses the solenoid WHICH is the safety cutoff switch for the system. But, this action will tell you if the cart runs minus the solenoid and the solenoid activation system...... chew on that until you digest it

Wish I could point to one or several things that got me going but I haven't a clue. I swapped out the 7 yr. old batteries with a set of new US batteries and cables. First push on the accelerator pedal and I got a shudder and no movement. Next push the same. After the 3rd or 4th try I got movement and kept going. Came to a down grade, let off on the pedal then pushed the pedal to accelerate and it would not engage. After a few pushes on the pedal it engaged again. Broke out the VOM again. This happened several more times the next day. Still couldn't find a problem. Have since gone on several trips of three to five miles with no failures but little confidence in getting home without incidence. I will post up any future failure/solution in regards to problem. Thanks Htownblue and Scottyb for your replies.
