Charger getting hot

I have a 48v Club Car with batteries that are about 1 year old. I had the charger fixed right after I got the batteries cause it wasn't charging at all. Relay replaced. The charger gets pretty hot after it has been on for awhile. It nearly always starts charging at 15 amps. Are these chargers supposed to get that hot? I recently read about the DPI chargers on this site. Would I be better off getting one of these? Thanks for the help.

Chargers get hot. That's why they say to place them in the open so they can get air. The DPI is a good charger, it also gets hot maybe even more so than the PD charger. If you go with a DPI get the one that does not need the OBC. It has a building float charge, comes in handy when you don't use your cart every day, keeps batteries topped off.

Thanks for your input. When I say it gets hot, it is really hot to the touch. Can barely pick it up without using a rag or something. Getting that hot is normal? I don't have to move the charger that much normally but with the grandkids up, I was moving the boat and golf cart in and out of the garage. Thanks again.

it should ot get hot to the touch ... open it and try blowing it out

They get pretty hot. I've never checked the temputere. I think mine would be hot enough that you would need gloves to handle.

I have had quite a few customers complain about how hot the pd chargers get.

I did some searching and saw that club car sent out a service bulletin about them getting hot, saying it was normal believe it or not.

Where i live some people plug their carts in during the day, when it is 130 degrees in the garage, so i tell them to try and wait till evening to plug them in.
I also have felt DPI chargers that feel pretty hot to the touch.

I use one of those "Master/Controlled" power strips / surge protectors.

The charger gets plugged on the Master outlet and a portable fan on one of the Controlled Outlets.

Anytime the charger is running the fan automatically comes ON and keeps it cool.

Mine always gets hot to touch but works fine. I usually put it on early evening when it's cooler out and then it's off by morning.
