Default 95 Club Car 48v... Can these dead batteries be saved ?

Just picked up this cart yesterday in a "horse trade" kinda deal... so I don't have much invested into it. (swapped one of my AR15's for it)

I put the Fluke on each of the six 8V batteries and NONE of them showed any sign of life. All six were stone cold dead.

I don't have a 48v charger yet... so being the mad scientist type... I decided to try something to breathe some life into these things.

I had some scrap aluminum laying around and made a pair of bus bars to connect all six batteries in parallel.

The only battery charger I had was an old 12v car charger that was aquired 30+ years ago.

I connected the charger and watched it occasionally over the course of a few hours... Once I was comfortable with the setup I let it charge overnight.
By morning they all measured a bit over 7v each.

I decided to connect a marine battery to the other end of the system and that helped bring them up to 7.8v each over a few more hours.

I wanted to confirm that the cart was mechanically sound before buying a new set of batteries... so I dropped them back in and made a few laps around the property (1acre).
They didn't last long and the cart was obviously getting weak so I parked it back in the garage. I put the Fluke on it quick and saw they dropped to 43v.

A few hours later... they leveled out and are now sitting with 7.5-7.6v in them and total is at 45.6v combined.

Is there any hope for these things if I hang a decent 48v charger on them or let them trickle charge for a longer period of time ? or should I just drop in a new set ?

Quite frankly I'm surprised I got any juice in them at all.

NOPE THEY ARE TOAST !!!

You might be able to keep them on a charger and drive it around the yard a few times but I would not drive those batteries further than I was willing to walk... 7.5 volts is under 10 % state of charge voltage...

Yeah that's 'kinda what I figured.

I'm surprised they came back from the dead enough to drive it at all.
All 6 were at ZERO volts when I brought the cart home yesterday.

At least I was able to confirm the cart was otherwise mechanically sound.

A fresh set of batteries and she will be good as new again.

Thing is they are not really back from the dead @ 7.5 volts, take them off the charger and they will fall or fail rapidly...

I once had a Horror Freight Battery Charger short out and completely drag a new battery down to ZERO volts... The battery accepted a charge and served me well for a good number of years...

I have them on a charger again. 'Gonna leave them on longer this time to see if they come up any more.
If not... they will swapped for new ones.

After being on charge all last night and all day today... They are starting to look promising.

Got home from work today and the chargers were pushing at 9.27v.

Pulled the chargers off and batteries dropped to 8.65.

I'll update again in an hour to see where they settle at.

Miracles have been known to occur... But lets let them sit off the charger for at least 12 hours and better yet 24 hours then read some voltage. Then put them back in the cart and test them under load and report voltage again...

They sat about 3-4 hours.

I now have:

8.42
8.39
8.36
8.37
8.38
8.37

Measured via Fluke 77

I reconnected chargers and will let them run overnight one more time to see if I can bump them up another tad.

We have some kind of fancy $20,000 battery reconditioning machine where I work. (forklift shop)
No idea how it works but my boss offered to try tweaking them on the machine. All I know is it was expensive and he uses it to bring (savable)forklift batteries back to life.

Just a breif update...

After being on the charger all night... batteries came off at 52.9v this morning.

I tossed them back in the cart and ran my kid to the bus stop and back. Probably ~1/4 mile total.
The cart felt strong and climbed the driveway hill effortlessly.

Put the Fluke on them and had 49.1v after the ride to the bus stop at 645am.

Came home tonight, 11 hours later and batteries are at a steady 50.00v.

I also brought home an old 48v Yamaha charger that I will use now to keep them alive long enough to replace with Trojans.

At 48 years old... never thought I'd be buying 6 Trojans at a time.

Overall that's not too bad for batteries brought back from the dead, just keep in mind that 50.0 volts is only 80 % state of charge which after only 1/4 mile of use is not too good either... I've run my 2 year olds up to 3 miles and they still level out at 51 volts or 100 % SOC
