2000 Club Car DS Steering Binding
I recently purchased a 00 CC DS and have made a few repairs to get it running a little better. The major problem I am having now is that the steering is binding. I have disconnected everything and checked the steering wheel, Universal joint, rack, and all linkages. I've lubed everything and all seems to be working smoothly EXCEPT the universal joint. It seem like the rack is mounted too close to the steering column and the U-joint is having to bend at too extreme of angles and is binding up on itself at certain points in the turn making steering VERY hard. I've included a couple pictures for reference.
Is my steering column too long? Is the plate the rack is mounted to in the wrong place (bent)? The old U-joint was pretty worn down from all the binding/ grinding on itself so I replaced that but the problem is still there so I don't want to damage the new U-joint. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

Re: 2000 Club Car DS Steering Binding
It looks like your frame has been cut to install a factory lift kit. Typically, with the factory lift kit, drop brackets (Z-Plates) are installed to drop the front suspension down and provide lift. A longer steering knuckle is then installed. By looking at your pictures, it appears that the Z-Plates have been removed and straight pieces of steel have been installed in place of them in an attempt to remove the factory lift kit. I would assume that the length of these plates are incorrect and are positioning the front suspension in the wrong place for the factory length steering knuckle to attach to your steering rack without binding. It looks to me like the suspension is pushed back too far and close to the steering column. The angle of your steering knuckle is way too excessive. The front end needs to be brought forward to take some of the angle out of the steering knuckle. It will then work normally.

Re: 2000 Club Car DS Steering Binding
Thanks for the reply Tahoe. So can I just try to unbolt the current brackets and extend them to another hole (or buy some new steel and drill holes) or do I need to get those Z brackets? It definitely looks like there has been some "custom" work done on the front suspension.

Re: 2000 Club Car DS Steering Binding
14 7/8" is the magic number. I just went out into the shop and pulled a tape measure. From the round beam that runs across the width of the car to the center of the bolt hole that holds the shock tower and front suspension in place is 14 7/8". I'm referring to the edge of the bar, to the center of the hole in the I-Beam that has the 3/8" bolt through it just behind the bumper. This measurement was taken on a non-lifted DS. This is what you'll need to know if you don't want to install a factory lift kit. If you want to get some Z-Bars, they're expensive, and from the looks of it, you already have some sort of other lift kit on it. I wouldn't recommend using both styles of lift kit on the same car. It'll be way too tall. Just get your measurements right and it should be fine.

Re: 2000 Club Car DS Steering Binding
Ok so just so Im not confusing things.
#1 is the bar you are measuring from. Is #2, 3, or 4 the other 'shock mount' point you are referring to? I believe you are referring to #4 but want to make sure. Thanks!! |

Re: 2000 Club Car DS Steering Binding
Ok based on that picture the measurement is right at 14 7/8. If I extend that length some I think that will solve my problem but its right on what you said it should be.
