Default wires are HOT

83 1/2 ds...new batteries, 6" lift...20" tires. all new coils and new box w/ the 5 microswitches.
the battery wires get extremely hot after about 5 minutes of riding.
any ideas what I can do to relieve this....I have a new set of 4ga wires to put on it but was wondering if that will fix the problem or cause something else to overheat.
thanks for the help in advance!

Adding 4g cables will not create more heat, they will probably fix your issue unless something else is going on.

More often than not crappy corroded or loose connections as well as wires with internal resistance from corrosion is what causes wires to get HOT to the touch...

It is usually a bad connection at the terminals that causes the wires to be hot but you should replace your wires with the new ones - and clean all of the terminals in the process!

Spidey,

I have an '85 DS. I am in the mountains in North Carolina. With stock wires, I had wire overheating as well. And that is with stock wheels and tires. With larger tires, you definitely need to install the heavier wires, and like others have already said, make sure that your connections are all clean and tight. Mountain inclines with larger tires and the resistor setup may not be ideal. How is your torque and speed going up hills?
