How hot should the motor get?
48v iq DS with the black motor, running 23" tires on a 6" lift.
With just me running around the neighborhood for about 30 min with some decent hills it was hot enough that I couldn't hold my hand on it (of course I couldn't find my infrared thermometer. What's normal? |

Re: How hot should the motor get?
Large tires are going to make it run hotter for sure. Find your thermometer and you will know how hot the outside is. The inside is much hotter.

Re: How hot should the motor get?
what gauge wires are you running ....I had stock wires and with 23" tires it would get hot....I'm not a professional here but upgrading your wires may help. I upgraded motor, 2 gauge wires, controller, FnR switch and solenoid. because with stock motor I didn't have enough torque....and the motor and wires got hot...these guys on here are great and maybe they will join in with better information.

Re: How hot should the motor get?
170º case temp is a reasonable safe temp. You can bet at that temp the armature is well over 215º or more.

Re: How hot should the motor get?
I had a problem with high temps in my motor with tall tires and a lift. What's your speed? Any other upgrades? If you can't touch it it is too hot. You don't want temps above 190 consistently and anything in the 210 or above range can cause damage. Based on my experience I think you are asking your motor to do too much.

Re: How hot should the motor get?
Tomster nailed it by bringing out my old post. The 23" tires and 6" lift are the red flags, IMO, but I am not a tech, salesperson, repairman, or dealer. Others will know far more. Just my experience in that post.

I need to get out my infrared temp gun if I can find it and see what the real temps are!

Re: How hot should the motor get?
I was concerned about my temperatures so I got a Temp Sensor from Amazon.
After using it for a few months I found that my temp rarely got above 60C/140F. I duct taped the sensor to the motor and used the opening where the battery light used to be for the readout. |
