Club Car Precedent Whine Noise

Good Evening All,

New to to form. I have been lurking around for several months now during my 2006 Club Car Precedent build. I'm new to Golf Carts and this is my first cart I've completed. I noticed it's developed a whine from the rear end area once the cart decelerates. Almost when you let off the peddle. I don't recall hearing this noise before. I've read several posts that indicate a clicking but this is more of a whine. The easy way would be to take it down to the local golf cart shop however I've done all the cart myself and would like to try and keep it that way…or at least until my skill level runs out.

The input shaft bearings are a common problem inside the differential. They're cheap and pretty simple to change. A motor bearing can cause a very similar noise, however.

Here's a test you can try. Find a small hill and let your cart coast down the hill. If the noises are still there it would be mechanical like bearings or gears. If they are gone it's probably electrical noise caused by the PWM pulses being applied to the motor.

I live in a very hilly neighborhood, that's where I first heard it was going down a hill with my foot off the peddle. I did check the oil in the rearend last night. Level was good but unsure how long it's been in there. I've got a bad feeling it isn't an oil level issue though.

One last thing. Since you only hear it decelerating it might be the regen. Can you turn it off?

Not really, the motor and the input shaft rotate at the same speed so it's nearly impossible to distinguish where the noise is coming from. Typically, I take the motor off and inspect the bearing. If you can spin it by hand and it feels rough, replace it and re-install it. If the problem still exists, dig deeper.

Not wanting to sound too ignorant but what's the regen? How do I turn it off? Thanks

Regen is pedal up braking. When you let off the throttle the motor is used as a generator and it has a braking effect on your cart. If you still have a stock controller you would have to take it to your dealer and have it programmed.

Or install a high speed magnet to completely eliminate the regen for half the price of a speed code.
