98 ccds 48 volt charging question.
Hey gang I'm new to the group and need some help. I have a 98 club car ds that doesn't seem to be charging correctly. When I plug the charger in it comes on for 20 seconds or so, shuts off, and does the same thing one more time and then stays off. The amp gauge never goes over 2-3 amps. The pack voltage is 45 - 46 volts. I was messing around with it this morning and did get it to do a normal charge (amp gauge at about 13 amps) but it only stayed on for an hour or so. Would the obc poss. cause this, does it tell the charger what rate to charge the batteries at? I ran the charger to a local shop, he plugged it in to one of his carts and it worked like it should. His pack voltage on that cart was 48-49 volts when we plugged it in and the amp gauge went to almost 15. Thanks for the help.

Re: 98 ccds 48 volt charging question.
Let me add this, I did just recently purchased the cart and the charger has been acting the same way since day one. The batteries were fully charged when I first brought it home and didn't really have a chance to use it. We used it camping and it died on the kids a day and a half later. I plugged it in at the campground overnight and every chance I had, this is what leads me to believe it's not working correctly.

Re: 98 ccds 48 volt charging question.
Make sure there is a single cable on the pack negative battery post and that the cable goes through the OBC.
Do an OBC reset first and see if the OBC will allow increased current to flow from the charger. Just disconnect the pack negative for more than 10 minutes and connect it back again. If the reset works, the next few charging cycles will take a little longer. |

Re: 98 ccds 48 volt charging question.
I tried the obc reset with no success. I just tried another charger just to be sure it wasn't something intermittent with mine and got the same result. I am leaning towards the obc more and more. It's just odd that it will cycle the charger on then off twice. I'm stumped..lol

Thanks for the input!! I was leaning towards the obc from the start, I just wish you could bench test one to be sure.

Re: 98 ccds 48 volt charging question.
The OBC turns the charger ON and then measures the current on the pack negative cable as it passes through the OBC hall effect sensor.
If no current is detected, the OBC turns the charger OFF. If You had no current at all registering on the charger meter, the problem could be the fuse on the back of the charger receptacle, but since you have 2-3 amps, that is not the case. You can run a 10ga wire from the back of the charger receptacle negative wire directly to pack negative. If the OBC is the problem, You should see the charger meter go to full amps during the time the OBC turns the charger ON. The OBC will still turn the charger OFF once it does not sense current flowing. |

Re: 98 ccds 48 volt charging question.
The OBC is the culprit if the batteries are good. I've seen old worn out batteries cause these exact same symptoms.
