Default Another hunting cart build

Just wanted to start a new thread to keep up with my build and to post questions to y'all.

I picked up an 89 CC DS 36V earlier this week, and I'm working up my plans to make it into a hunting cart for this upcoming season. Hoping to have everything done in the next month or so.

Attached are some pictures of what I'm working with.

So here's my to-do list:

1. Get new seats, old ones are trash.
2. Install 6" All-Sports Super Sport lift
3. Get 22x11x10 off road tire/wheel combo
4. Install reducer for head and tail lights to run off a switch with fuse and relay.
5. Redo the cable lugs for every cable on the thing and clean all the posts.
6. Repair the fiberglass damage on the rear.
7. Camo wrap the fiberglass body, paint the bright work trim black

This cart has an aftermarket D&D motor on it. He told me the wires had been upgraded to 4 gauge, but I need to measure to verify that. It supposedly increases the torque, which sounds great to me!

What's happening is when I drive it for more than say 5 minutes or so I start smelling something burning. I checked under the seat, and one of the battery cables was smoking at the terminal on battery 4.

Only that one terminal got hot, so does that indicate the lug or the terminal are just corroded and need cleaning/replacing, or is that a sign of impending battery failure?

Thanks for your help, and I'll be posting progress here as the month goes on. This site is a great resource, and I really appreciate it!

Also, I'm seeing where I need to know whether the dust cap cover is black or silver for the lift kit.

It looks black in my opinion, just dirty. Am I right?

One last thing...

When upgrading to 4 gauge wire, is it only the wires between the batteries that need to be replaced? What about the other 6 gauge wires, do they need to be upgraded to 4 gauge too?

Thanks!

You have the silver metal dust caps. The black plastic ones weren't introduced until the 2004 models came out.

All of your 6 gauge cables need to be replaced with 4 gauge. It's not worth doing anything at all unless you replace them all.

Good info, thanks!

Do you think bad cable lugs could cause heat like that? I've seen corroded cables get hot before, but I'm curious to know if a battery could be on its way out or not.

Based on the wiring in the pictures, it looks like the terminals could stand to be replaced. It's probably just a poor internal connection causing your heat and smoking. The aftermarket motor on that cart is really not designed for your system. The old-school resistor 36v system such as yours isn't intended to be upgraded. Anything you do to it to increase the performance can cause an extra load and generate more heat. Your first priority needs to be converting the cart to a 48 volt cart with a solid state speed controller. Scottyb, a sponsor of this forum, has pre-fabbed conversion kits exactly like you need, and you'll get to keep the same motor.

Thank you Tahoe
I am offering the new Alltrax SR speed controls and the FN switch on the fly with these kits, add a push button reversing contactor and the cart can't get any more modern than that

Sent scottyb a sack full of money last week. I'm doing the solid state 48v conversion, so hopefully this thing will do what I need it to do!

Did some fiberglass repair over the weekend. I got a parts cart with the deal, so took part of it's body and grafted it in. Came out pretty good despite being my first experience with fiberglass!

Quick question... what is the main difference in performance between the All Sports 6" Super Sport Lift and the 6" A-Arm Lift Kits? They're within $20 of each other and have similar descriptions.

Is a 22" tire going to look right on either of those lifts?

The super sport lift kit has a much more stylish look about it in the front. Also, it's much better when it comes to adjustability of the front end alignment. The rear of the super sport kit will give you a double U-Bolt design as opposed to the single style of the standard kit. Get the Super Sport kit.
