48v. solenoid check
Hello everyone , after major headaches on electrical probs. Cart worked fine then quit. Jumped solenoid after knowing batts fully charged . Cart goes f & R ok . Replaced solenoid next day , same problem . Question i have is , Ford uses 12v. same style sol . 4-post 2 big term . 2 small . small terminals are labeled I for ignition & S for start . These solenoids have nothing labeled . My question is does it matter how the small terms . are wired ? also how do you test solenoid off unit ???

Re: 48v. solenoid check
I don’t know about a CC but on a Ford solenoid it does matter since one of the small terminals, “S” engages the solenoid and the "I" terminal delivers 12 volts to the ignition while cranking over the engine until the solenoid is disengaged.

Re: 48v. solenoid check
Automotive solenoids will not hold up to Golf Cart use.
GC solenoids can be bench tested by applying the proper voltage (one pos and one neg) to the small terminals and checking for continuity on the large terminals....... |

After ScottyB's explanation it seems that the small terminals are in fact different then a Fords, one acting as a ground terminal and the other as the solenoid engagement. ScottyB, which one is what, (Positive/Negative,) or does it matter for CC? |

Re: 48v. solenoid check
When the solenoid was replaced, did you also replace the resistor & diode??? A bad pre-charge resistor on the large terminals could cause the solenoid contacts to fail prematurely.. A bad or missing diode on the solenoid's small terminals can cause a controller to fail from the voltage spikes when the solenoid is activated/deactivated..
Did you ever resolve the OBC issues??? The ground circuit for the solenoid is controlled by the OBC.. |

The small solenoid terminals are polarity neutral.. They can be hooked up either way.. The diode installed across them is what determines the polarity.. The diode will have a stripe around one end.. The striped end always connects to the positive.. |

I read that the automotive solenoids are designed for momentary engagement and the golf cart demands extended times of engagement. So failure is eminent . |

Automotive solenoids are rated for "Intermittent Duty", while cart solenoids are rated for "Continuous Duty".. Also automotive solenoids usually have a "chassis ground" thru the mounting bracket.. This is a BIG NO NO on a sparky cart!!! Although newer auto solenoids are beginning to go to an isolated ground due to all the sensitive electronics in today's cars & trucks.. |
