85 club car DS issues
New to carts so please excuse my ignorance.
Recently acquired this old "gem" for little to nothing with some issues... It has a very old charger with the hour dial that I had repaired at the local "pro shop" for $100.. I have a couple issues: 1) rotten egg smell so I assume at least one battery is bad. (Supposedly 9 months old) do I need to unhook each one individually and check with a voltmeter? 2). It had all speeds for the first few days, now only has high speed. I understand a coil might be bad? Any link to a troubleshooting guide? ive got a few more issues but I figured this was a good place to start... Thanks Frank. |

Re: 85 club car DS issues
Probably should add my intended use for this cart.
I'd like to slowly turn it into something I can use randomly at the hunting properties when the conditions are right. |

Re: 85 club car DS issues
You can check each batteries voltage with a meter without unhooking anything.
I would unhook them if you are going to load test each one. A cheaters load test is to attach your meter to each one and press the go pedal to the floor and the brakes at the same time for a couple of seconds. To be on the safe side, jack up the back first and support with jack stands. This will put a pretty good load on the pack and any weaknesses should be pretty obvious quickly. Compare your readings on each battery as they should be very similar. |

Re: 85 club car DS issues
yes you could have a coil or solenoids or micro switches bad
look at each coil and strum it you will know if one is broken |

Re: 85 club car DS issues
Sorry for the delay, I'm just now getting back around to working on this little project.
So I "strummed" the coils and they all seem intact. Where should I look next? I looked for the speed switches and didn't see them? Those wires seemed to run to a silver box with red end pieces? |

Re: 85 club car DS issues
I'm new and therefore ignorant so please excuse me. I watched the videos and have a few questions.
I only have full speed, foreward and reverse at this time. When I put the cart in neutral and slowly press the pedal I hear three clicks throughout the pedals travel. How many should I hear? I'll look into it some more tonight. |

the main (turns on others) and 4 speeds key on >> pedal engages main solenoid(drivers side)with a micro switch>> as you press the pedal it engages a micro switch and a solenoid with a coil>>> til you get full speed solenoid (passenger side) no coils are used if you have full speed only then ether a solenoid or micro switch is bad reverse is same do you know how to test them ? |

Re: 85 club car DS issues
Same in reverse. Not exactly sure how to check the micro switches. I did see how to check the solenoid in a previous link you posted.
Thanks for your help. |

Re: 85 club car DS issues
disconnect the batteries
place multi-meter on continuity black probe on yellow wires going to small stud of solenoid(s) red probe to other small solenoid press go pedal and you should see/hear continuity do this for all solenoids if you do not see/hear continuity the micro switch is bad trace color to bad micro switch |
