Default Radio Noise on AM Band

I have a 48V Precedent (2004). I get heavy static an the AM band when cart is moving. Loud and clear when not moving. CD and SD cards fine all the time. Is there anything I can do to filter out this noise.

go to Radio Shack and get an in-line noise reducer.

It seemed to work well with all of the old cars I used to have!
(Now... I wish I still had them!)

Yeah I agree, the best thing you could get to reduce the static is some sort of in-line filter with your antenna wire. You should be able to pick up filters at any electronics store. A spark plug won't help you in an electric cart... but you could try j.k.! (just kiddin)

More than likely it's interference from the controller.. The AM band is more sensitive to electrical interference than FM is.. Installing a choke coil on the radio's power supply may help some, along with locating the antenna away from the controller.. Some radio interference is just the nature of the beast with sparky carts..

The noise is generated by the DC motor brushes and the controller. DC motors brushes arc and radiated RF noise to the antenna which no filter can remove. The contoller is a PWM and that noise is induced into the wiring and a filter may help.

If it is brush noise, it will get worse as the brushes wear out and need replacing. That is one of the big draw backs of DC motors. AC motors have no such problem.

"Due to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), the radio will not pick up the AM frequency in most golf cart models."

A quote from BuggiesUnlimited.com on their radios.

Use a seperate battery that is isolated from anything else. Keep the radio as far away from anything that might emit EMI.
