Light kit.
Started to wire my light kit. Bought a Chris products kit for my 81 since from research here it is the one that will fit with a little tweaking. [Found an electric planer works great for trimming the top of the headlight bezels.] No weatherproofing anywhere except for the headlights themselves! Spade connectors everywhere and not even sealed where the wire goes in. The taillights and front marker lights, I took apart and sealed them with silicone, {GE's finest] but am debating whether to seal the rest of the whip/connections with self vulcanizing [linemans] tape or just replace it with a new harness and use proper weatherpack connectors. The supplied harness/lights might be OK for a parade cart in Arizona but not here. Wondering what have others done?

Re: Light kit.
I installed a light kit on my 99 and did note the complete lack of weathersealing of the harnesses.
I think what you have already done to keep the weather out of the light itself is enough. Weather will attack all electrical connections but they will last years before needing replacement. Sort of like trailer wiring and lighting. You'll repair them more than you'll use them! I highly recommend installing wire loom on the harnesses wherever they can chafe. It makes them look sharp too! |

Re: Light kit.
Thanks for the reply. All decent trailers sold here [Canada] come with a fully sealed wiring harness, brakes included so those problems are somewhat in the past. Was at our local starter/alternator/battery garage today and they do a LOT of work on road trucks/trailers. They deal with crappy connectors all the time. He said, cut them off and hard wire the connections or splice in Weatherpack or Packard connectors where you need a joint. Also bought some 4 wire and 7 wire cable. Seal that well and he said it should outlast the life of the cart. Pics to follow.

Re: Light kit.

Re: Light kit.
Already stocked with that shrink tube! Great stuff along with self vulcanizing tape. That, sealing the joints along with the heavy outer jacket on the wire themselves should be good against goddam road salt and humidity.
