Dangers of 36v to 48v. HELP!!

I just bought a 36 volt Club Car 1986 model and want to know the in's and out's of changing it to 48. Buddy told me to just put the 8's in and i could change my charger to 48 and go with it. Sounds cool to me. Then i talk to a mechanic and he said bad idea. Would burn out the solenoids and resistors and after a while the motor. It could even catch on fire. Kindof like living by my buddy so would hate to burn down my house. Any advice would be helpful. I don't have the control box the newer ones have just he 5 bank solenoids. I have upgraded my cables to 2 ga and just need to know before i go much further.

Yeah the resistor carts take it some & the solenoid carts are not gonna take it at all. With that said, both types have motors capable of being run safely on 48v. A potentiometer and controller are needed and all the old solenoids and resistors are removed.....cables need to be 4 gauge ..... HD F&R ...Fun, but more to it than throwing 8v batteries in it and go!

What does the p'tegnonegnometer thingie do? I have got 2 ga cables, what does that do for/against me?

The Potentiometer replaces your V-Glide (or wiper)...
The controller replaces your coils!

Stuff (aka... coils, solenoids, forward/reverse switch etc.) will get VERY hot and burn out,
if you don't replace them with ones at a higher voltage rating!

2 ga. cables are on the right track,
but... they really have nothing to do with the other stuff scotty told you about!

i really appreciate all the help. and you know if you don't laugh at youself every now and then you will go insane. i decided to just go back with the 36v system and continue with the upgrading. if i don't like the results of power i will just sell it for a large profit and purchase a 48 volt cart and upgrade it. i bought regular cart to jack up, fix up and hunt off of. Good market for them here in Ms. and could turn it quickly if i wanted to. doing pretty good right now. 500 for the cart and 500 for batteries. i am going to order the lift Friday and should have it painted by end of next week so i should be ready to go for less than 2 K.

I am getting my lift kit in tomorrow and will hopefully put it in Wednesday and i will snap some photos then. I replaced 3 of the solenoids and i still don't have the granny gear. I think my motor is fine though so i trying to see what i have with my remaining solenoids. I know some are good because it ran. i am missing the granny in foward and reverse. Any body know which one it is starting from right to left. I replaced the three on the left first, then when that did not fix I replaced the two remaining with two of the older ones figuring one would have to do the trick. The brand new one on the far right (without the resistor coil) will click when the excellerator is barely pressed. Then it will go at the second stage.

Sorry, i replaced the three on the Right first.

The one farthest to the driver side which clicks first is the master...without it you don't move! the one next to it is 'granny'. If you replaced the master when in fact the cart was moving in some gear then the master solenoid was still good and could be used in the 'granny' position.....hope this helps

Should the master click before any movement is seen? My master clicks and then you have to press a little further for the cart to move. the two next to the master is new as well.
