Default 48 to 24 volt reducer?

OK. Been wanting to ask this for a while. 1995, 48 volt DS Club Car. If what I've found out in here is true, Club Car installed 48 to 24 volt reducers on these cars. Why? What good is that? You then need a 24 to 12 volt reducer.

I have shamefully displayed my ignorance in the past, and am willing to do it again to find out something. Electronics wizards please enlighten me.

That looks just like the 16-12 volt reducer club car put on carts.

Thanks mrGolf. Then why is it 16 to 12 and not 48 to 12? I think I want to do away with the whole thing, but one of the wires runs to the controller.

The wire going to the controller is or should be hooked to the B- on the controller. This allows the obc to account for the current draw from the batteries. You can remove it and the rest of the unit and install a 48-12 volt reducer. I would hook the negative of the new reducer to that same B- connection.

Thanks again mrGolf. What I want to do with this cart is not install a converter at all. I am going to install a 12 volt deep cycle (all custom and hidden of course) to run all 12 volt accessories. So, can I do away with the factory reducer, disconnect from controller and just be done with it? Thanks!

Thanks mrgolf. You are a genius! Can you add 20 yards to my distance out of the T-Box? I've been having trouble with that lately too! LOL!

Thanks, everything I know about carts I have learned from this site and owning three carts.

I feel your pain on the drives, we have a tree on the first hole that 10 years ago I could fly the ball just past it. Now I can't reach the tree with a 20 mph tail wind.

People had been hooking lights and other 12 volt accessories up to two batteries on 36 volt carts for years. The 48 Volt cart was released with 8 volt batteries and the 16 to 12 volt reducer came out to allow people to continue what they knew. While it's not as good (or expensive) as a 48 to 12 volt reducer, it gets the job done.

Thanks Tahoe! Seems as though most in here agree that drawing off of 2 batteries instead of the entire pack is not a good thing to do.
