Default I need more torque

I've got an '08 Precedent (S/N PQ0833-XXXXXX) with a stock controller, F/R switch, solenoid and motor. (This is a different cart than the one with the bad solenoid that I posted about earlier.) It has 2ga cables. I presume that it came with Speed Code 4 since I get ~22mph on flat ground with 22" tires.

I would like to use it to move a trailer around my yard. There is a small hill where the cart stalls out when backing up with the trailer if I don't get a small "running" start. I know that a stalled motor = max current. I also know that if I do this too much, I will eventually let the smoke out of one or more of the stock electrical components.

Is my best move to upgrade my controller and see if that gives me enough torque to do what I need? Which controller should I get? If that isn't enough, then upgrade my motor? Should the stock F/R switch and solenoid be upgraded with the controller or do I only need to do that when/if I upgrade the motor?

I'm only interested in gaining torque. I really don't want this cart to ever go over 25mph and I would be perfectly happy if it stays where it's at.

Replace the control with XCT400 for use with the stock motor. This will gain about 30-35% more torque but - BUT - this hill and trailer situation may be more of a strain on the cart than you know. Nothing creates more component heat than slow going under load. There are high torque aftermarket motors like Admiral A2 that when paired with a 500a control and 2g cables would be much happier and capable of the task.

Thanks for the response. Is there any reason (other than the extra $80) not to just get the XCT500 and tune it down for the stock motor? This way I don't need to upgrade the controller if I end up upgrading the motor down the line.

Exactly, I can think of atleast 3 reasons to get the 500 over the 400 and turn it down for the stock motor now. The most obvious being having enough control for any aftermarket motor later. Another reason being it comes from me with the 400 super duty solenoid. Another reason being it includes the cooling fan which allows the control to maintain longer peak output. And a 500a control turned down 100 amps will basically idle along never working to it's maximum level or getting hot which should extend it's useful life.

But really the fan and the solenoid upgrade justifies the relatively small difference in price.

I too would recommend going with the higher current controller and dialing it down to start with. Then you have room to increase current later. The controller will run cooler too.
