Is 6x8 vs 4x12 worth extra $500
Hi,
I am looking at buying my first golf cart and am debating between two different carts; specifically a 2009 model and a 2012 model. In terms of appearance they are both in perfect condition. The 2012 costs $500 more than the 2009 but the only difference between these two carts (as best I can tell) is the battery configuration. The 2009 model is using 4x12 Volt batteries where the 2012 is using 6x8 Volt batteries. Batteries are same date. Other than this; I don't see any difference between these model years and what the 500 bucks would be giving me. What do you guys think - is the 2012 worth the additional $500 bucks? Bill |

Bill,
I think the 3 model years newer is worth the $500 premium, and the 6 8 volt batteries will give you more range. There are a bunch of threads discussing this and they are worth the time to read them. Here are a couple to start with: http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...-part-1-a.html http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...sion-6-8v.html Aflyer |

Re: Is 6x8 vs 4x12 worth extra $500
Though I own a 2007 with 12v batteries and until a month ago, I also owned a 2006 with 12v batteries, I would say yes it's worth the $500 extra. As was stated above, even if just for the newer model year it's worth it. But that's a generally speaking response. I'm sure there are 2009's out there that have been taken better care of and are in physically better shape than some 2012's - so it really depends on the wear and condition of the carts being compared. If they both appear to be in great shape, I'd still lean towards the newer model. That's 3 less years that someone wasn't using it in some capacity or other. I made a similar decision back when I bought my first gas powered DS and opted to pay a few hundred dollars more for an identical cart that was a few years newer.
All that said, it has been endlessly debated around here whether 8v batteries are better than 12v. I think stats prove they are as far as run times and longevity. But my run times always suited my needs so I never really cared that 8v's could go longer. But if you can get an extra year or more out of a set of 8v batteries, that may be another reason to spend the extra money. I have yet to go through a set of batteries that I bought and cared for from new. My 06 had 2008 batteries in it when I bought in 2010, but it was a golf course retiree and I had to put new batteries in it in 2013. Bought my 07 in 2013 and it has 2010 batteries in it. I was able to nurse them through the 2016 season but they appear to be on the edge of life right now. So, with 2 carts with 12v batteries, I got 5 years out of 1 set and have gotten 6 years out of another, but both sets had a couple of years of who knows what kind of care and maintenance on the batteries before I bought them. My cart with the batteries I bought in 2013 was still going strong and not showing any negative signs when I traded it for an ATV about a month ago. Since I've already gone long winded on this one - also consider the parts you typically replace eventually on these carts like the MCOR, speed sensor, shocks, etc. I had replaced all that stuff on my 06 and haven't needed to yet on my 07. So, if I were considering which ones of those to buy and maybe only 1 or 2 hundred dollars separated them in price, I would buy the 06 with the newer replacement parts. But if both had all original parts, I'd go with the newer one every time. |

Go for the newer with the 6 8s. Reason ? Around here a set of 6 8 volts will run around $6-650. A set of 4 12 volts with less run time is over $800.. My 2 cents

I would go with the newer cart, 6-8 hold longer run time. If in the future you decide to change the controller or motor for speed or torque, you'll be happy that you have the extra batteries.

Re: Is 6x8 vs 4x12 worth extra $500
I had a 2008 W/4-12V batteries. I never needed the extra run time and I'd run my cart for hrs cruising around the park I stay in.
I always wanted the 6-8V setup and I bought one about a month ago. It's a 2012 and remaned by CC in 2015. I sold my 4-12V cart. |

I agree, go with 6 8v setup. Better overall and the batteries are not as dang heavy!

Another vote for 6x8v here. Club Car quit using 4x12v for a reason.
