Regen 1 motor using series components
Hello,
I am new to this forum and new to gold carts in general. I bought a 2000 Club Car DS with a 48V series motor and system. When I was taking it apart to clean and modify it I broke all 4 studs off the motor. I found a 1997 Club Car with the regen1 motor for 125 bucks and took the whole rear end off it and put it on my DS cart. I hooked all the cables back up and it runs fine on jack stands. I was told a regen1 motor wouldn't work with series components. Am I good to run it this way or will I destroy the motor, controller, etc by doing this? Thanks for your assistance. |

Re: Regen 1 motor using series components
The main difference between a shunt and series motor is the design of the field windings. The series motors fields are more robust and are intended to driving the same current as the armature (series connection) The shunt motor i.e Regen1 motor the field winding is much smaller in diameter and usually intended to drive around 15~30A at the most. Putting a shunt motor into a series system will result in a cooked motor.
The higher impedance of the field windings will also result in a lower current draw than the controller + proper motor are rated for so while it works on jacks it may not have the torque to overcome acceleration from rest. |

Re: Regen 1 motor using series components
So I should remove the regen motor and replace with a series motor. Thanks for the help.

Re: Regen 1 motor using series components
Ok.... So I got a DCS cart this weekend, put a new 400 amp controller in it and a new set of batteries. Cart moved but it wasn't running right and shaking bad. So I put another motor on it which i thought was a dcs motor. Turns out it was a series motor but it is running fine and seems to have plenty of power.and... the motor I took off was series. So... does it work the opposite way?

Re: Regen 1 motor using series components
No, it doesn't work either way. I'm not an E-Z-Go Guru by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm pretty sure the DCS motors are labeled S1 and S2 as if they were a series motor, and they lack a speed sensor, much like a series motor, so it would be easy to have a mix up between the two.
