Default Controller question

Hey, i am working on a '97 CC DS that we are giving to my dad. I was told that since I have a black controller, and there are known to have problems, it might be a good idea to replace it while the cart is torn apart with a regen II one. Just wondering if this is a good idea, and since I know nothing about carts at all, what I should look for if I need to buy one. Thanks,

Brew
