Default 85' ds 36v electric, one speed on accelerator

When pressing the pedal down, there is no gradual increase in speed - only on or off. about 1/4 throttle and it lurches forward (on), but there is no middle ground. Is this normal? If not, what can I check to see what is working and what isn't?

Any help is appreciated fellas. I'm very new to this and I want to sort out the mechanical aspects before I start on the cosmetics.

1985 CC has 4 speeds (a solenoid for each) and a master.
As the gas pedal is depressed they should all click in sequence going from driver to passenger side... put the cart on jacks and remove the seat to test.

Finally got the time to check them. There is a very easily distinguishable click for 4 solenoids. Assuming the master clicks at the same time as solenoid 2, then they are all functioning. Any other ideas.

Is there a broken coil in the "weenie roaster"? [coils that are connected to the solenoids]

Make sure you check the continuity of each one after they click. Just because they click don't mean they actually work. Look for broken wires or coils.

Thanks mgray! Help an electrically deficient brother out. How does one verify continuity?

Dundee, I'll check the coils tonight. Thanks for all of your input!

you will need a digital multimeter. It has a continuity setting to where when you touch the two leads together you get a buzz sound. Then you put one lead on one large post of the solenoid and the other on the other large post after they click to make sure the solenoid actually closes and makes contact. If it closes you should hear the buzz sound from the multimeter.

okay gents, all coils are good and every single solenoid tested good at WFO (or full throttle if you are a devout christian). Hopefully this limits the possibilities??
