Insurance
I need to insure my 2000 CC because of city regulations. I have my auto and motorcycle thru Progressive, but they want the serial # and it can't have any 0's but mine has 3? Where can I get cheap insurance? (I only use the cart for short trips to the store and a few times of golf during the year.)

Re: Insurance
Right now, my homeowners insurance covers my cart.
But at the moment carts are not allowed on streets (I'm working on that). But anything that happens at camp, accident or whatever is covered under homeowners. |

Re: Insurance
I had statefarm (still do) when it was a golf cart so it was covered in some camp grounds. later I made a LSV out of it and that is a totally different policy but still though statefarm .

Re: Insurance
I will need to look into this because the state of Kentucky allows carts on streets under 35 mph, but it is up to individual cities to pass an ordinance allowing it in the cities.
That being said, the Kentucky Statute (KRS 189.286) does not require any type of registration or VIN change. The only requirement is that the vehicle is inspected by the local sheriff's office. So I'm not sure how insurance would handle that. |

Re: Insurance
Here is the problem, depending on what state you live in. If your cart is legal to drive on a public street, you may, depending on the state, be required to have insurance same as an AUTOMOBILE. The insurance you have through your homeowner's policy is nothing of the sort.
OK. It gets worse. In states like VA, you must have a DMV issued license plate. If you check the box stating you have insurance (and you may think you do with your homeowners) you may not have the proper insurance. Your driver's license is then suspended by DMV. It may take you weeks or longer to find out your license has been suspended. Meanwhile, you may get pulled over for something like a taillight bulb. You will then be issued a ticket for driving with a suspended license (could mean JAIL TIME) and will be required to pay upwards of $1000 to have your driver's license reinstated. To add insult to that injury, you are then placed on what is called "assigned risk" SR-22, you then have the pleasure of paying much higher insurance for a few years. CHECK YOUR STATE LAWS. |

Re: Insurance
There might be some confusion here with the letter "o" and the numeral "0".
If you spoke to your insurance company they are looking for a vehicle VIN # that is 17 digits long (since 1981) Also no VIN number can contain the letter "o" or letter "i" so as not to be confused with the numerals "0" and "1". Not all states require a cart to "become" a vehicle, so there would be no 17 digit VIN. In states that do require license plates, I believe the state issues a 17 digit VIN for that cart. (at least from the research I have done). I have also spoken to my insurance company about coverage on campground roads and what if I had an accident with an automobile inside the campground and I was told that it would be covered under homeowners. I have yet to discuss my carts being street legal as this is something I am just now looking into. |

Re: Insurance
And the plot will continue to thicken with the whole street legal cart mess. Thought about this quite a bit. Some states won't issue the owner a title/vin/ license plates because the cart was not "born" with a 17 digit vin. So, a person on vacation from another state, with tags, in a cart just like yours can be legal in YOUR state, but you, in your home state will be ILLEGAL.
Think about that. |
