1997 Club Car Ds Torque

Hello everybody!

First time poster here, and I'd like to thank everybody on this forum that helps out folks like me.

I have a 97 Club Car DS (48volt 3.1hp motor) and the thing zips around on flat ground, and downhill I've clocked 22 mph occasionally. However, I live in a particularly hilly part of VA and when I have myself, wife, and son on the cart, we crawl up the hills at a speed of 6 mph or so.

The batteries are 5 years old but hold a charge at 50.0-50.5 volts for a few days while not plugged in to the maintainer. The voltmeter reads between 45.5 and 46.5 while under load going up these hills and returns to around 49 when we resume on flat ground. Therefore, I don't believe the pack is bad.

What are y'alls suggestions to get more torque up the hills? I understand that torque doesn't mean more speed necessarily, but will it help us go a little faster, maybe 8 or 9 mph, up the hills?

I'm new here also, and have a 99 DS cart, same setup as yours, from what I have learned so far upgrading the controller will get us the torque we're looking for, I recently sent my original controller ( which was only 225amps) off for an upgrade to 400amps, it was a more economical option than buying one of the aftermarket controllers, while I understand the aftermarket controllers have much more capabilities, I wasn't trying to go all out with power and $$ , supposedly I can use the 400amp controller without worrying about damaging my original motor, I am upgrading all the power cables to 2ga and replacing the solenoid with a higher amp, just to increase dependability and current flow with the upgraded controller. I'll know how much improvement in a few days when my controller comes back.
You can upgrade the motor to a higher HP motor as well, but that will require a higher amp controller also, so I'm starting with the controller, hopefully that will be all I will need to get the torque I want.

I'm not a fan of upgrading used controllers.
Today's Alltrax controls have increased capacities, like 400 = 460 amps and cooling featuring thermal towers and fans.
Plus user programming and a 2 yr warranty.

If it is a series cart torque is easy you'll just need money. Increase your amperage to your motor to get the torque. I.e. New controller. Or just talk to Scotty b as he has posted to get squared away

I have looked on your store's website quite a few times. The cart will never be lifted, beefed up, and ready to climb Mt. Everest, just carry up to 4 passengers to the local pool about 1/2 mile away. Do you think that the GE controller on clearance on your website would be sufficient? I believe that going from 225 amps, to 4 or 500 would almost double the torque. Would this increase in torque translate in better power, i.e. speed, up hills?

Hi, looking for someone that could tell me how to fix a problem on my cart? My cart don't turn off when I take my foot of the peddle. I have to turn the key off to go from forward to reverse

I just upgraded my 93 d's to an alltrax controller from Scottyb. I got the controller, hd solenoid and hd f&r switch. I also upgraded from 36 to 48 volt. I ran 2 gauge cables through the cart as well...after install I actually needed to turn down the torque a little because it peeled out in the grass pretty bad and on the street, with traction, if would have thrown my boys off the back...lol..I am using the stock motor. My top end is about 17 mph but it gets there quick. I used to completely crawl up steepish hills and now it it more than twice the speed up the same hills...some I hardly slow down at all.

Hi Guys. To the original poster, use a 400 (or 500) amp Alltrax SR controller and the Admiral A1 motor. You will be surprised by the increase in speed and torque even uphill. Read more here 10 reasons Alltrax should be your next control

To RXLuke, doubling the size of the speed controller does double the motor's access to amperage. The result will not be a 100% increase in torque because the stock motor cannot utilize that much amperage efficiently and at the end of the day it is still the same stock 3 hp motor. But it should make more power than it can chocked down by the OEM 225a control. Ideally you would increase the controller size and the motor size together. This would give the best results.
Look at Admiral A1 motor.
