Default Hit By Lightning??

OK, here's the deal...the other day we had a pretty severe rain/lightning storm. My 2000 Carryall Turf 1 48V was outside and we had a strike maybe 100 yards from it. My neighbor SWORE that they saw ball lightning. Either way, the cart WAS NOT plugged in. The next day, I went to run the cart-nothing! Turn the key to 'on' then put in forward and step on the pedal....you car hear the distinct "click" of the solenoid, the nothing, except a somewhat high-pitched whine from the motor (I assume).
OK, where do I start? All connections are good, batts are 8 months old and cart is generally well cared for. The part that concerns me is that whine...is this normal? It probably could have been there all along, it's just that once the cart moved, I would not have heard it. I'm really stumped on this one, guys.....

I've had a lot of electronics fried by lightning. Lightning can do some weird stuff.
Hopefully it's something simple and not the controller.

I'm not the expert but from my experience it's usually the sensitive electronics that get fried.
The heavy duty stuff like wiring, motor, switches, etc usually make it. Exception is a direct strike.
One time I took a high voltage hit I was in my Dodge pickup when my CB whip antenna touched a high voltage wire. It blew the radio up, burned the antenna into, blew all four tires and ruined the rims. Everything else in the truck survived. I put another 30,000-40,000 miles on it after that.

As you said, the strike was 100 yds away so I figure something sensitive to a voltage spike.
The whine you heard, I have no idea.

There should be some way to test the controller.

Some of the guys who are good at troubleshooting should chine in soon.

Yup, EVERYONE I've asked says the same thing-controller. Any ideas on where to get one? This is an unmodified, stone-stock cart. My mom drives it and it really won't benefit from any upgrades, IMO.

OK here's the follow-up..it was indeed the controller. I swapped one from an identical cart and runs 100% ! Now, I have to get ahold of TahoeDog for a decent used controller to replace it with! Thanks to all who replied, you guys are great!
