Default 95 CC Charger over charging batteries OBC?

HI,

I've looked though the site trying to see if I could figure out my issue before having to post.

95 CC new batteries a month ago. Noticed I could smell battery acid and the batteries we bubbling before charger shut off.

I have tried two other chargers and the same thing happens. I have also done the OBC reset with no luck.

From everything that I have read, am I to assume the my OBC is bad and needs to be replaced? To remove the OBC I would need to remove the cart body.

Is there any other way to diagnose this issue to see if it's something else?

Thanks
Rudy

Bubbling is a normal part of the charge cycle. To find out for sure if you're over charging, get us some voltage reading while this is going on.

Also, it's not unusual to see voltage readings in the 60 volt range during the end of the charge cycle.

As mgray70 said, that is pretty normal. When my neighbors OBC went out, the charger would not cut off. It would also move while plugged in and other things that assured us it was bad.

The pack voltage during the charge will tell you for sure as will watching the amp meter fall off to 0 and cut off your charger. With his and mine we will both get about 60/61 volts at the end of the charge cycle.

Thanks for the info so far. I will get voltage readings this weekend. I notice the bubbling when the charger gets down to around 5 amps. Seems to sit there awhile before moving closer to 0.

With buying new US batteries I would hate to have them get ruined, we all know how much these cost.

when i was new to golf carts i filled the batteries to the fill line like normally done with a car battery
i also had bubbly batteries and acid boiling on top of the batteries and ground
golf cart batteries should be filled 1/4'' over the top of the plates, no more

i also ruined my batteries
thou they were 7 yrs old

Here are the voltages during the charge cycle.

Starting voltage after use all day 45.6

Charger (Amp reading of 16) 53.6
Charger (Amp reading of 12) 56.4
Charger (Amp reading of 5) 60.7

This is where it gets interesting

With the charger reading 5 Amps Voltage reads 61.2.
After 45 mins I check again Charger reads 5 Amps and 61.7
45 mins later charger still reads 5 amps and 61.5 volts, the first three batteries in from the Pos cable are bubbling a little batteries 4,5,6 are ok.

30 mins later charger reads maybe a hair less then 5 amps 62.1 volts and the same 3 batteries are bubbling a bit more than before.

At this point I unplugged the charger for fear of damage to the batteries.

So I am not sure what to do from here.
I'll let you experts way in on this . Thanks Rudy

You should allow the charging cycle to finish.

Every time You reset the OBC the next few charging cycles will run a lot longer than normal as the OBC is not counting energy units OUT/IN, it is instead using the backup algorithm dV/dt to establish a baseline profile for the pack.

The ammeter should never drop below about 3 amps, if it does, the relay contacts inside the charger may be sticking.

Next time the charging voltage gets into the 60v range, measure each individual battery, use the 20Vdc setting on your meter so You get 2 decimal places.

Also take a look at the sticky on the chargers above this forum. It goes into great detail of explaining some of your concerns.

NoleFan4ever thanks for the tip.. It's a little overwhelming when trying to read all the info.

I have to dealers close to me and I don't trust either one. They have each told me different things.
