Default Need to un-do knucklehead work

I have a 36v DS with the separate solenoids I bought and have trying to get the reserve to work correctly. Everything was connected when I got it and apparently wrong.

When I put the cart in reverse the cart goes into reverse full power without pressing the gas pedal. The F/R switch sparks like hell and it goes.

I have check the wiring several times following several diagrams and it looks correct but will check it again.

1. He did tell me that the motor was re-wired and could of it have been done wrong and that is my problem?

2. The reverse and forward both should go through the solenoids?

It is fun but dangerous as hell. Any help would be appreciated.

on main battery positive post is a wire that should not be there but should be on a battery in the middle. Reverse is driven off of three batteries

1. Where do the 2 cables go to that connect to the bottom of the F&R switch?
2. Are we to assume forward works as designed, normal ?
3. What are the first 2 digits of the serial # ?

It has nothing to do with 36v vs 18v if the cart moves without pressing the pedal.

Your motor is wired incorrectly (Motor S2 is not going to Solenoid) and possibly the FNR as well.

If Your cart has the FNR with the bent middle tab as in this thread, wire it according to the description given in post #6:
1983 club car forward and reverse
If your FNR does not look like that, post a picture of what You have so we can point you to the correct diagram.

The serial number I have is A388 42975. The tag says on top "Reconditioned by Club Car". It works perfect in forward.

Looking from the batteries at the F/W switch, it has 5 connectors. 2 that spin and 3 that are permanent. 2 on bottom and one on side.

Driver side that spins is white wire and goes to solenoid closest to passenger side. Th other side that spins goes to the #4 battery which would give it 18v in reverse.

There are 2 post on the bottom and one on the right side. This is where I am confused looking at wiring diagrams that show the back of the switch and I am unclear to what goes where.

1 goes to positive side of battery.
1 goes to A1
1 goes to S1.

If you can answer what goes where I think I will have it fixed.

Thanks for your input.

You have the latest FNR for that 5 solenoid design and as You already know, it is not wired properly.

This is how the FNR should be wired:

This wiring diagram shows the Motor posts so You can make sure that:
S2 is connected to pack negative
A2 is connected to the solenoids.

I have it hooked like the diagram Sergio posted and I have the same problem. Maybe mine being a reconditioned cart it is different.

1. Does the motor have 2 fields? A1 & A2 forward and S1 & S2 Reverse (or opposite)? If not, how does the motor reverse?

2. Do both voltages for forward and reverse go through the solenoids?
If I have it figured out, as you step on the gas each solenoid is activated, you have less resistance and higher voltage is sent to the motor.

4. If someone has a block diagram of how the voltages work that would be a big help.

If I know these answers, with my multi-meter I may be able to figure it out.

If the FNR and Motor connections are wired like the diagram, there is no way for the cart to behave uncontrolled in just one direction.

Yes, the power for both Forward and Reverse are on the FNR.

Forward is +36v and Reverse is normally +18v (1/2 throttle), but you can wire that bottom post to another power source (+24v, +30v or +36v) depending how fast You want Reverse to be.

What makes the cart go Forward or Reverse is the polarity of the Armature Vs Field winding.

Forward:
+36v -> Solenoids -> A2 -> A1 -> S1 -> S2 -> Pack Negative
Reverse:
+18v -> A1 -> A2 -> Solenoids -> S1 -> S2 -> Pack Negative
Please note the Armature current flows the opposite direction when in Reverse (The field current direction does not change).

Double check the Motor connection to Pack Negative and to the Master Solenoid on the driver's side to make sure they are on the correct Motor Posts.
