CC Motor upgrade question
I have what's either a 1983 or 1984 Club Car DS and am looking at upgrading the motor. I currently have the original GE 36v 2hp motor attached with male spline.
I'm looking at a 36v 3.5hp that comes with a 19 spline female attached below. Is there some sort of adapter or something that would make this work? Thanks in advance. |

Re: CC Motor upgrade question
No adapter, you have the old style 16 spline male. This rear end and motor is not widely supported due to design weaknesses. If you want to upgrade find a newer CC rearend with the 10 spline connection shown.

When I got the cart it had 2 batteries completely dead that somehow shorted the motor and both field wires came unsoldered from the lugs on the motor. I fixed this myself by crimping and soldering terminal connectors to the field wires inside the motor. I had to fix the lift kit because it was installed wrong. Had to fix the brake shoes because they were installed wrong. All the bushing are messed up because of this so I have to replace those sometime. Needless to say it's been a mess but at least I've got everything working good and safe. I'm just a little worried about my engine repair holding up. Heck I was gonna borrow money to get a motor for $150 shipped. Since it seems I'm kinda stuck with what I have. Is there a way to change the rear end gear to get a few more MPH outta this old beast? |

Re: CC Motor upgrade question
I looked up the manual and it appears that changing the input shaft to part #1013764 could be the fix?

Re: CC Motor upgrade question
radelon I hope that works out for you, but I'd go with the suggestion Scotty gave you. I'm sure he's seen and answered this a time or two.

Re: CC Motor upgrade question
Oh trust me, I'm pretty positive he is right. But I usually don't take no for an answer. I mean I never worked on a DC motor before but yet I tore it apart and fixed it myself.
The thing that's really making me question this is, according to the manual based on my Carts SN, this is a 1984 DS. And if that's the case in 1984 the rear end should have came with the 10-spline already installed. Now maybe there's some overlap and I actually got a 1983 rear end, just not 100% on how to tell. But with some of these guys around here, they've probably seen enough carts to be able to know right off the top. The real question is, did anyone ever try to see if the 16 spline female input shaft inside this rear end could be swapped to the 10 spline male input shaft just by changing the input shaft. There's a possibility they could be a direct swap. This is something that probably wasn't tried because it's much easier to just change the rear ends with one that works. It's just not cost efficient for some of us. The other thought is this. Most newer motor don't come with the cover on the shaft end of the motor. By installing a cover makes the 10-spline female side of the motor almost flush. this also makes the motor mountable to the rear end. Now if you had an adapter that was 10 spline male on one side that flush mounted into the motor, then stepped to a 16 spline male on the other. You could even drill and tap a set screw into the motor end to hold the adapter in place, then you could use new motors on old rear ends. Now here's my idea. Hypothetically, if this method could work, would it be worth doing? Would this adapter be a sellable product? I know I could get the piece fabricated from some connections I have. But I would need to know specs or have examples so I can have it made. How long would the 10-spline male part of the adapter have to be, in turn how long will the 16 spline male part of the adapter have to be? Where could I get the female versions of these to use for measurement and molding/casting processes? |

Re: CC Motor upgrade question
I really do not believe so; primarily because most of the older style have a limited market and there is just not enough margin to be gained after engineering, tooling, etc. That's not to say someone like yourself could not do it and then get it to distributors, but I just do not believe the financial reward will be there for the costs you will have into it.

Re: CC Motor upgrade question
This older differential was a weaker unit and the accepted fix is to upgrade to the very readily available newer stronger unit which supports all the modern motors.
