Default 99 ds headlight wiring

I have a 48v that I just installed a head/taillight kit on. I purchased a 48v-12v reducer but when I hook it to the series of batteries it sparked and made the stock low batt light come on. So I disconnected and just wired the pos and neg leads from the light switch to the pos and neg terminals of two of the batteries. I know its 16v but when I pulled the light switch everything worked??? So do I need the reducer? Could the reducer be bad or incorrect since it cased such a spark. If so could someone link me to the correct reducer for this situation?

What kind of reducer (type, model) was it? Have a pic?

CTD has some drawings for installing reducers he will probably post.

From what you described, your installation sounds correct unless you had a wire backwards or there was a high load on it when you made the pack connection.

Was the reducer going to a fuse panel? If so, how did you wire it up?

Supernight asin#B008CM4WZ2 GOLF CART voltage reducer converter 48V to 12V 10A 120W I checked to make sure it was wired up correctly 48v input to the neg and pos of the #1 and#6 batteries.
Is it definitely a no no to just keep them wired directly to the 2 batteries?

Short answer is I recommend a switch to power the reducer on and off.

The guy above ^ CTD is the expert you need. But also, if the lights did not come on right away after the spark, it may take a few seconds to energize the reducer.

It's not as much as "no-no" as it is a drain on those 2 batteries and a higher tax overall (would/could effect longevity if you use them a lot).

I would use the reducer since you have it and wire as CTD illustrated. Then you are spreading it across the pack and the OBC will read the current draw and compensate for it on recharging.
