Default Charging Question

I am having a debate with a buddy of mine over how often to charge the batteries. My take is charge them every day that you use it and don't run them down below 60% state of charge. He charges them every single time he uses them. So if he goes for a 3 mile ride, plug it in. A couple of hours later, go for another 4-5 mile ride, then plug it in again. Go for another late ride and plug it in overnight. I told him he's nuts and you can only charge a set of batteries so many times. He's charging 2-3 times a day! Thoughts?

If the cart is not moving, it should be plugged in.
Period, end of story.

Charge lead acid batteries after every use. Always. The discharge cycle causes a chemical reaction that creates lead sulfate on the plates (sulfation). It is a soft material that is converted back into lead and sulfuric acid, provided the discharged battery is immediately connected to a battery charger. If a lead acid battery is not immediately recharged after use, the lead sulfate will begin to form hard crystals, which can not be reconverted by most battery chargers. Even those that have special desulfation programs are not always successful at getting full capacity back from heavily sulfated batteries.

To further complicate things, a low amp charge cycle can also be detrimental. You need high amperage during parts of the charge cycle to generate gas bubbles which prevents electrolyte stratification. Smart chargers are a must for long battery life.

He is actually right on the money and it is not as much "how many times you can charge them" but more so "how charged can you keep them" Anytime you ride, plug it in. If you park it, plug it. If its stopped, its charging, etc. etc. This keeps the batteries and their highest charge level and prevents sulfate formation which is the biggest deterrent to battery longevity. Salts and sulfates will inhibit the charge by building up on the plates. By keeping them at optimal charge, you inhibit that type of formation. The further you pull a charge down, the harder it works to recharge and you get more stratification and can throw off the indicated charge by 2-3 tenths. Just do some quick and easy research and you will find this very same information all over the net from battery Guru's or engineers.

I can understand, but the facts of the science outweigh the skeptics from old school thoughts of "they'll get a memory, they'll fail sooner, it will ruin them, etc. etc." Even Club Car and most major manufactures will state in their manuals to plug them in after each and every use no matter how short the travel distance. And if you remember, this was the principle of the OBC's as they were to monitor the current usage and replace that same amount....

From PD3 manual:
PLUG IT IN!

For maximum battery life, Club Car recommends that electric vehicles always be recharged after 40 to 50 energy units of discharge or each night in order to avoid deep discharging the batteries. Charging between rounds will also extend battery life; use the CDM (Communication Display Module) (CCI P/N 101831801). See Communication Display Module in the appropriate maintenance and service supplement.
