Default 98 DS - 1st upgrade..Controller or Motor??

We just bought our first cart. Its a 98-CC DS, Regen2 - 48V.
Our campground has a couple of paved steep hills and the bone stock DS can barely climb them. On flat ground its fine and runs around 10mph (I haven't actually checked the speed). The previous owner replaced the batteries (date codes are D6&E6), and the cables as well.

The stock controller is 225amp and I assume that this is the biggest issue. I am considering a 400 or 500amp controller, with the expectations of burning out the existing motor this camping season or next.

It has a rear seat and at times it will be occupied. Not looking for a speed demon, just need to increase the torque to maintain hill climbs without wanting to get out and walk!

Tell me - Is the controller the best way to go for the first upgrade?

That cart has two solenoids. The one on the drivers side has a coil on it. If the coil is getting real hot the solenoid may not be working. You can just hook both large cables on the same post and unhook the speed sensor, pig tail on end of motor. If it run better that will confirm the solenoid is bad. You can just leave it hooked that way if you don't want the regen braking. It will not hurt anything.

Thanks for rapid response MrGolf. I will test the solenoid in the morning!

I have a 99 DS series cart that I bought a few months ago, original controller was a 225amp , same as yours , I had little to no torque for hills or inclines, especially since the cart is lifted and has 22 inch tires on it, I opted to send my controller off to be upgraded to 400amps, made a WORLD of difference, I did also upgrade my cables to 2ga and upgraded my solenoid also, but the controller throwing the extra amps gives you the torque, and supposedly won't necessarily kill your motor , at least not until you go above 400/450 amps I'm told.

I don't know pucky about these Re Gen2 buggies and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last nite, but here's my thoughts. Something don't sound right . If you are only getting 10 MPH, you must be on code 1( did these carts have speed codes) or have low battery voltage. At code 1 you should have plenty of torque, I would think you would have no loss of speed on hills on code 1 unless something's not right with your cart. Check your pack voltage 12 hours after charge and make sure you have good voltage. That's all I can give you on that, maybe some of the pros will tell you whether I am right or wrong.

Yes, a controller is the best first upgrade along with at least 4 awg cables and a heavy duty solenoid to go along with it. By feeding your motor more amps you will gain torque.
I put a 500 amp Curtis thinking the same as you, that I'll cook my motor. We'll so far it has drug logs out of our hurricaned yard and pulled a locked up lawn tractor across 2 yards and a paved road, leaving ruts in the yards and black marks on the road. My motor is still going strong.
Make sure everything's right with your buggie first. A controller upgrade will do you no good unless all is right. And I don't think all is right

I don't have a Series cart, its a Regen2 cart. But, thanks for the confidence that I wont burn up the motor in a couple of uses. The motor casing has some surface rust, so I assume its got some years on it and maybe tired.

As far as I understand, the DS carts are not programmable, like the Precedents. The pack looks good and at full charge I am over 51V.

I see that, after some more reading. I also see some talk of converting regen2 to iq.
That gives you the ability to have a programmable controller.
From TDawg:
"It's the controller causing the Regen2 cars to be so sluggish. I've converted many Regen2 cars to IQ and left the original motors on them. 19.6MPH with speed code all day long."
You can put an alltrax in and not have to worry with speed codes, it will bypass them.
And also can be programmed not to cook your motor.

It is not that, the DS's are programmable, but I think you are referring to older model DS's before they were controller or IQ carts....

Maybe we are talking 2 different things. I'm talking about using the hand held programmer to change parameters in the controller such as things like the speed capability, regen rate and things like that. Not something as sophisticated as the XCT controllers manage.
