Default 2008 Club Car Precedent

Hey all, new here, I have a lifted 08 Precedent, and I feel like my batteries will need replacing soon. They are draining very fast. I can only drive about 25 min until it starts to slow down. But my concern is, I had to basically limp it home today because it was acting so dead. But then I went back out about an hour later to pull it into the garage, and I turned it on and pulled it in and then it acted like it had a good charge? Zippy from the start and I drove it a lap around the yard and it seemed fine, which concerns me that it's not the batteries that is completely the problem. Anybody else experience this?

Welcome. Please post up your serial number (first half at least) so everyone knows what model you have. It might be another problem that is causing the cart to go into "limp home" mode. The controller can detect problems like a bad speed sensor or solenoid and cut power enough just to get you back to the barn. It might also be as simple as your charger is not giving you full charge and needs to be reset. Can you test your battery voltage now and then again 12 hours after charging?

Quinnt94,
I am posting the link below for the battery education Sticky. Many things like charging habits and water levels can have a lot to do with how far you get to drive.

How old are the batteries, and what kind of care have they had?

Its a 48V set up. The cart was used at a country club, and I purchased it when they got a new fleet of carts. So I don't have a whole lot of previous knowledge on the cart/battery situation. Looking at the batteries they look a little dirty. I cleaned them up the best I could. They are 4 interstate batteries. PQ0803 are the first half of the serial numbers.

That is an '08 built the 3rd week of the year.

And if your batteries are low on electrolyte, add distilled water to cover the plates with 1/4" or so over them. The reason it was snappy was your batteries sat and the electrolyte recovered a little.

Please look on the battery for the date code. It iwll be a sticker or engraved number along the top edge. It may also be a stamp mark in the lead posts. Take a pic of what you find and we can tell you how old the batteries are.

In the meant time, check all water levels, charge the batteries (fully) and then wait 12 hours and take a reading at the pack with a digital volt meter and give us that reading. (and if it is not the batteries, it will be the speed sensor but lets get one thing at a time so we are not chasing a rabbit)

I know when I got the cart the water levels were low. I got the cart for a very good price that I couldn't pass up. I'm leaning towards it just needs new batteries because they probably weren't maintained the best but I will check today after work and keep you all posted. Out of curiosity, how much am I looking to spend on batteries? I don't wanna want to lose an arm and a leg because of it. But I suppose you get what you pay for? Are there any "middle of the road batteries that would be reliable?

$700 or so for the batteries. No middle off the road. There is quality (US Batteries, Trojan, Crown and Interstate is coming around) or junk. The no name generics will save you just a little but cost you a whole lot in the end....

Properly maintained quality batteries can go 5-7 years or more. I am a little over 7 with my 4x12 volt US Batteries.

Again, I would make sure this set is shot before buying new ones. Check your date code and take a few steps to try and verify their condition....

I'd check the battery connections and make sure they are tight.
If you have or can get access to a digital multimeter, charge the cart. After a 12 hr rest period, check the pack voltage and each individual battery voltage.

Update: I unhooked the charger today so I will let you know tomorrow what the voltages are for the pack and individual batteries. I checked the water levels and all are covering the plates, but 2 out of 4 look like they could use and little added to them. Also, while I was examining them, I noticed like a gurgling/boiling noise coming from 2 of the batteries on tje passenger side as well. Is that normal? I tried to find the date of the batteries but can't seem to find any markings on them?

The date code is stamped right there in the upper corner of the battery. It is not what I expect to see for Interstate as they usually start with a letter and then a number but others who know more than I can decode it.

Gurgling is normal and a little is a good thing as long as it is not boiling over. It helps keep the electrolyte mixed up. If one or more batteries are not doing it but others are, it could be a sign that some are bad.
