Default 12v vs 6v Batteries

Are there any problems associated with using 3 12v vs 6 6v batteries in a 36v cart? Do I have to make any mods to the system if I do this?

Assuming you are going to use a standard golf cart 12V, you will be cutting your run time effectively in half. Voltage sag might be so bad, it runs even less before you need a charge. However, if you were to keep the amp hours the same, you'd hardly notice anything.

Same everything just probably less amp hours as you have 3 as compared to 6. I have the 4x12's in my 48 and have no problem. You would not notice an operational difference unless you were making very long travels and then you could have less distance....

But you will run into a slight positioning issue as your battery trays are probably laid out to accommodate shorter 6v batteries and going to 12v are much longer. You would have to also get new hold downs and drill new holes where they hook in on your tray.

So I am saying all this because it could be a lot more work then you wanted....

Don't want to jack this thread but it might help the OP too.

Was interested in buying a cart yesterday (36v), guy says good strong batteries. I asked him what brand and how old. He said he had to go check because he had just bought a new 12v. He was running 3 eight volt and 1 twelve volt. I did not buy.

Anybody ever seen this?

Problems? It was not a CC, but wouldn't this confuse the charger and harm the batteries?

I thank you, will leave it as is. Have a lot of corrosion and need to replace/repair the battery rack. Using Duracells and several are wet on top whenever I finished charging, of course the acid ends up on the rack and the garage floor.
She said I was too old (81) to lift these things and they did feel a lot heavier than I thought they would be, but I did manage to get all six out without doing any damage to myself.

I think you made the right choice.

Lord I hope I can do that when I'm 81! Did you have a battery strap?
