Voltage Reducer - Install Question
I have a question on installing Voltage Reducer (Red Hawk VOLT-0017) that I bought from ScottyB that includes a Plug-N-Play harness?
History: 2010 CC Precedent PD1016-xxxxxx Lights, turn signal & horn kit installed by PO. Looking at the included instructions it basically says plug and play, but the diagrams, and my common sense, says that the power source (12gage Blue Wire) should be attached to the 48volt source and not the 16 volt source as it currently is. QUESTION/CONFIRMATION #1. Do I remove the carts ~12gage BLUE wire, currently attached to Batt #2 (16volts) Positive terminal, and install it on the Batt #6 (48volts) Positive terminal? Note: I just found a wiring diagram for a 2014 cart and the Batt identification numbers are the reverse from my above description. That diagram also shows the blue wire coming off of the 48volt positive terminal. |

Re: Voltage Reducer - Install Question
Interesting... I just bought a VOLT-0014 30 amp reducer and on the 12 volt output side they provided a 2-wire Deutsch connector. The 12v (+ and -) wires coming out of the reducer appear to be 12ga up to the female deutsch which is good for 30 amps however, the provided pigtail with the mate male deutsch is 16ga. wire ??? which is questionable for 30amps.
Is you VOLT-0017 wired the same? |

Re: Voltage Reducer - Install Question
The 16ga should be fine for a short distance, if You are going to extend those wires, keep the splice closer to the Deutsch connector.

Re: Voltage Reducer - Install Question
To be honest I didn't notice the actual wire gage size when I installed it. I went back and looked at some pre install photos and it would appear that the black and green 12 volts wires coming out of the reducer going to the Deutsch connector are larger than the three 48 volt input wires going into the reducer. All five wires on the jumper splice harness connectors look to be the same size as the smaller three wires going into the reducer. The five and three also appear to be the same size as the pre exiting wires that are in the 12 pin connecters where the splice harness is fitted. Since my voltage reducer is only 20 amps and I'm only running lights, turn, stop and a horn with it, I wasn't that concerned about the wire size. I did notice that the extra "spare" pair of wires coming off of the jumper splice harness looked smaller than all the other wires on the harness. Sergio's answer above is far more knowledgeable than anything I could of offered anyway.

Re: Voltage Reducer - Install Question
I'm planning to splice the small 12 volt leads close to deutsch connector and extend either 12 or 14ga to the front of the cart as Sergio suggested. The small wires on the 48 volt side makes since due to the lower amperage. I just don't like splices but they will be soldered and shrink tube covered.
