Default Varistor MOV

Hello All
I installed a Curtis 500amp controller on my 1999 36V Shuttle 950 and as I was connecting the wires I broke my stock MOV. I contacted EZ-GO dot com and found the replacement MOV. I wrote them and informed them I have upgraded to a PQ motor and the Curtis 500 controller. I asked if this was the correct MOV as my plans are to eventually convert to 48V with my next battery purchase. Here is their response;
Please see the below comments from our technical support.

That MOV would have been on the vehicle as a requirement of the controller. If the customer has replaced his controller with an aftermarket one, I feel like he would not need it or he needs to consult the supplier of his controller. That MOV is rated at 75Vac/100Vdc. I would think he would be OK if he goes to a 48V pack as he should not allow his voltage to get much higher than 67V. However, this too would be dependent on the settings of his aftermarket controller.

I have texted Buggies Unlimited (thats where I bought the controller) and have asked for their input.
What are your thoughts? Do I need a MOV or not?

Metal oxide varistor it is there to protect the electronics from high voltage spikes you can get them for probably a dollar or two so use it.

I agree with the tech support, this is a design issue with the particular controller circuit, component selection and implementation.

I have never seen a MOV used or needed in any other Controller design.
