Melt down? pre 80 CC 36v to 48v conversion
I have just converted my 5 relay Club Car to 48 volts by putting a resistor wire on ground of relays and switching 6 volt batteries for 8 volt batteries from Sam's Club. I use my cart on my 4 acres with a steep hill. On 36 volt my Club Car and my 3 wheel 36 volt EZ-Go crawl up the hill. The Club Car now zips up the hill about 4 times as fast. I don't run continuous very long in any speed to reduce the stress on relays and motor. When 12 volt lights running on 16 volts burn out I will address that issue. For now I get bright lights. Total cost not counting batteries I needed anyway is about zero. We shall see how long it lasts.
IMO I think the old 5 relay system is better then running full amperage on your accelerator switch. My old EZ-Go uses single relay and I have to service accelerator slider switch often. I have a feeling that my micro switches and relays are original in my Club Car. Of course solid state controller is best solution. Just a thought about wiring. Everyone is upgrading to heavier wires for 48 volt. this doesn't make much sense. Higher voltage less amperage. For example if you pull 100 amps at 10 MPH with 36 volts you would be using 3600 watts. Going 10 MPH and using 3600 watts on 48 volts would be about 75 amps. Number for example only not actual measurements. Now if you dropped your voltage you would need heavier wires to get same watts. |

Re: Melt down? pre 80 CC 36v to 48v conversion
True but for example, if you have a high performance aftermarket motor and a larger controller that allows more current to be pulled from the pack, you will draw enough current to get the stock cables hot. It depends on your parts as well as how long or hard you drive your cart. When guys are discussing increasing cable size, it's not in reference to what volt system they have but rather if they've installed aftermarket motors and controllers that draw much more current. This applies to 36 and 48 volt systems. That's the layman answer. I can't help with engineering lingo.

Ok. I tried it once with 42 volts. Then I got a conversion kit from ScottyB.
