Clubcar periodically goes into 8mph slow mode speed sensor already replaced
Hey guys,
I am a bit stumped with this one. I have a 2013 Club Car Precedent with speed code 3 that will run fine up to 20 mph for a few minutes, then if I stop the cart fully, and press the pedal again it goes down to 8mph slow mode and stays there on all subsequent pedal presses. If I turn the key to off for a second, then back on, the cart will go back to full speed 20 mph again. At first I thought it was the speed sensor so I bought a couple cheap Chinese ones, the problem seemed to go away for a couple weeks, but then came back. I assumed it was crappy speed sensor construction so I bucked up for the expensive Club Car OE one, only to have the same behavior immediately after install. I have in the last 6 months already replaced the MCOR, Solenoid, replaced all the battery cables with 2 AWG, tested the batteries multiple times on full and depleted charge. The engine and the batteries are only 2.5 years old. Thanks for your help guys! |

Check your magnet ON THE MOTOR. Not the sensor.

Re: Clubcar periodically goes into 8mph slow mode speed sensor already replaced
I thought the same thing, each time I purchased a new sensor it came with a magnet so I have replaced the magnet a few times now with still the same behavior. Last night I changed out all my battery cables to my original ones, and noticed there were two wires going to the speed sensor that had the sheath partially worn away due to rubbing on something. I cut and spliced the wires and tie wrapped them well to make sure the problem didn't happen again. Then I took the cart out and tested it again and still the same periodic slow mode behavior.
I am starting to think there is a fault code on the OBC that isn't cleared that is causing the cart to function like this even though the speed sensor has been replaced. I looked online on how to reset the OBC and tried the instructions I found. In the instructions they mentioned taking the battery main negative cable and disconnecting it, then putting the cart in reverse and hold the pedal down for 30 seconds. The cart was "supposed" to start beeping and stay that way for 5 minutes, but it never beeped. Is it possible my OBC is stuck on this fault or the OBC itself needs to be replaced? Does anyone know how to test the OBC or a good tried and true procedure to reset the OBC to clear the fault code (if one exists)? |

The obc controls charging. On your cart all you need to do to reset it is unhook the negative battery cable for 10 minutes, that will reset it. The speed sensors you are buying are likely bad if they are made in China. Most of them are bad out of the box. On e other thing that will cause a cart to go into limp mode is the solenoid not releasing when you take you foot off the pedal. Welded contacts. Also you could have something that is not releasing the solenoid. Listen real close for the solenoid to release.

Re: Clubcar periodically goes into 8mph slow mode speed sensor already replaced
I just finished two different methods to make sure the OBC was reset, and after test drive the issue is still happening. I can hear the solenoid making a click a second or two after I take my foot off the gas pedal. Sometimes turning the key to off then back on will cause the problem to go away, sometimes it will still stay in slow mode after I turn the key off and back on. I also tested putting the cart into tow mode, then back to run, and so far every time I do that the cart goes back to full speed for a few times, then back to the slow mode.
I'm hoping one of these methods helps you experts tell me what may be causing this! |

Re: Clubcar periodically goes into 8mph slow mode speed sensor already replaced
My second thought is you have a controller issue possibly IF the cart is simply slowing at random intervals and when you turn it off and on it “resets” back to normal. Sounds like your controller is getting hot to me or has something internally possibly wrong.
Your solenoid wouldn’t limit voltage in the manner you are stating. And the motor seems to function normally when it gets the right voltage. I would test the voltage at the motor at full throttle when the cart is running 8mph as you say. |

Did you replace the solenoid after this behavior started in an attempt to fix it? Or did you replace the solenoid at some time in the past when this wasn't an issue?

Re: Clubcar periodically goes into 8mph slow mode speed sensor already replaced
Hey guys,
I replaced the Solenoid a while back when that had died on me. I think I may have figured it out, but I haven't been able to test it yet to verify for sure. Some time ago I had a 48 to 12v converter die on me. After replacing it twice in my infinite wisdom (stupidity) I thought I would do away with it and just wire my front LED headlight directly to 2 of my 8v batteries. I noticed the other day that while I was driving the cart during the day, all day long the cart ran fine. Then it dawned on me that when I am driving at night the problem kept coming up. Now I realize it must have been because the headlights were on, and I am guessing pulling too much load from the 2 batteries, or freaking out the controller somehow based on the unequal load. I ordered a new 48 to 12v converter and I will test it tonight after I install. |

I agree with David, since the Solenoid was not replaced as trying to resolve the "Limp Mode" issue, its contacts are likely "sticking" and causing your "Limp Mode" problem.
