Default forward/reverse lever

we have an 03 club car 48v. the forward/reverse lever and the 4 wires that go to the motor get really hot. the motor is fine and not hot, and neither are the wired on the motor side. then it has this odor that smells sweet and acidic sort of. only the forward/reverse lever and about 10 inches of the wires to the motor is hot to touch. what could be causing this? and is it possible to use a forward/reverse switch from an 01 club car 48v in its place?

So okay, lets ID this cart. It is a series drive cart. What are the first 2 digits in the serial number?

Looks like an original F&R switch - time to upgrade to heavy duty

the cart does not go forward now, could the lever be bad and causing the bad smell?

Absolutely. More correctly the contacts are melting within the switch. Like I said get a HD switch. Our switch is more heavy duty than the rest for this cart... search CC92F

@ Scottyb Are the studs/bolts on the CC92F the original CC sizes or larger ? I'm replacing cables on an 03 DS that's been having problems and noticed the rear of the F/R switch has some signs of arching so I will be replacing it. I'm in the process of making the cables and wanted to put the correct end on them.
Thanks
Michael
