soldering battery lugs
Can't solder my 4 gauge cables into my copper battery lugs. Can't do it. I have gone through about 6 lugs trying different techniques and I just suck at soldering. Once the solder is melted in the lug it has already hardened in the split second it takes me to shove the cable in! Apparently that hardened solder can't be softened... reminded me of chemistry class when green flames started shooting out- figured it was copper buring up. Tried a propane torch, butane torch, pen solder gun... tried it all. (even left the pen type solder gun on the floor and the wife stepped on it! bare foot, heel...Apperently I have a single digit IQ... everything that could go wrong has.) So, where do I get those connectors that come on the original battery cables? The ones I can crimp and then drip solder on to? Tried google but can't find them. No local stores carry them either. Any help?!

Re: soldering battery lugs
Are you using Flux paste before you solder?

Re: soldering battery lugs
Contrary to what the limping wife says single digit IQ would not give u the intelligence required to breathe..... Soldering has a few basic requirements.... Temperature, compatible metals, and cleanliness.
I use a vice where I clamp the bolt hole end leaving the cable hole up and acting as a cup...Strip the desired amount of insulation back and ....this is important. dip or mush the copper wire end in the Flux paste. Flux paste will etch the copper clean and put some in the lug end too. I twist up the now greezy fluxed up cable. Reel out a foot of good lead free silver solder with a low melting temp of about 425 degrees.... You with me? |

Re: soldering battery lugs
I'm right handed so torch in the left hand I heat the fluxed lug until the solder melts into it and fill it about 1/4 " from the top. Put the solder down back the torch away about 1/2 to 3/4 inch but maintain liquid solder while inserting the cable At he same time remove the heat and hold it for a couple seconds = done

Re: soldering battery lugs
I have seen this done on here with visegrips for a vise but I wouldn't want to do it....a vice helps....good luck. Also if your solder won't remelt get more heat

Re: soldering battery lugs
yup, that is exactly how I am doing it. Clamped in a vice and all, step by step exactly how I am doing it. I'll check the melting temp of my solder...no idea. 40/60 rosin core.

Ditch the resin core! That is the problem!!!!! My work here is done |
