Newbie: Wiring Accessory Block to Ignition

I have a set of accessories I'd like to run off of their own dedicated 6 port fuse block. I'd like for this block to be live when the key/ignition is switched to "On" only.

Questions:

1. Do I simply wiring in an ignition relay between the key/ignition and the hot line on the fuse panel?

2. Do I need to run a second hot wire from the positive battery terminal to the other side of the key switch?

3. For accessories, should I ground off of the battery negative terminal? My fuse panel only has a hot wire. (aluminum frame precedent).

p.s.- Yes, I do realize the inherent risks of wiring and electrical connections and will be sure to carefully research all options before attempting any wiring myself. I am simply using this thread as a starting point.

You say you have a 48V->12V reducer already fitted. Does it run all the time or only when the key is on?

I assume that the accessories you want to run are 12V so just wire your fuse block to the output of your reducer and run the accessories from it.

If your reducer is on all the time then change it to run only when the key is on (if you don't know how, then reply to this and we'll help you).

The immediate answer to all your questions is "No". If they are 12V accessories then the negatives go to the negative output of your reducer.

One more question if you do not mind.

My factory 2015 club car precedent wiring has the outer positive and negative battery terminal each with an additional wired in connector that is not attached to anything. The positive has a male spade connector and the negative looks like it goes to the controller, then back out with a female connector. They look like they are not being used, can I simply use them as my positive and negative? (I'd run the positive through the switch first)

The +48V and -48V of your reducer would normally be connected to them. If you have a factory reducer then it might be connected to the harness somewhere. I am assuming that your 2015 Precedent has an E.R.I.C. charger and no OBC. The ERIC charger looks like this photo.

You didn't answer my question as to whether your reducer only operates when the key is switched. Normally with after-market reducers, if your reducer has a "fifth" wire (i.e. +48V, -48V, +12V, -12V and a fifth wire then that wire is a trigger wire that turns on the reducer. By connecting that wire to the "cold" side of the key switch (i.e. the side that only has power when the key is on) then your reducer will only be on when the key is on and therefore your accessories will only be on when the key is on.

If your reducer does not have that fifth wire then it will need to be connected sightly differently to operate on the key. If you just connected the +48V to the key then you run the risk of pulling too many amps through the key switch. You can run it through a 48V relay so that all the key does is switch on the relay and the relay handles the power to the reducer.

It may be that your reducer already operates with the key in which case all you need to do is connect your new accessories to it via your new fuse block. Treat the reducer output as your 12V "battery" and connect your accessories (or fuse box) +12V to its +12V output and your accessories (or fuse box) -12V to its -12V output. Don't use the chassis for the negatives. Run individual negatives from each accessory back to the fuse box.

Sorry for not being clear. I have purchased a 48v-12v reducer with four wires. I will be using a relay on the "ignition" switch so it will only be powered when switched to "On". Thanks for confirming that the two unconnected leads are for a factory reducer (I didn't know they were an option).

When I connected my reducer (a 4 wire one), Sergio (the forum resident electronics guru) suggested the following relay. I used that one and it is great.

Just a heads up that I was able to get everything wired up nicely with a long term solution for extensibility.

That is a 12v relay, You need to get a 48v coil relay since You are using 48v from the key switch to activate it.
