Default 6 batterys?

If I have a 48 volt system......Is there a reason I need 6 batterys instead of 4 12 volt batterys?

Yes. Your run time will be GREATLY reduced. The 12 volt automotive/deep cycle marine batteries will not last near as long as a REAL cart battery either.

$1,200.00???????

8 volt Trojans are $130.00 each - where did you get your figures? Either do it the right way, or your idea. This question comes up weekly...

2004 Club Car, and Yamaha started producing cars wtih 4 12v batteries.. Both have now at the least offered 6 8vs as an option. Further Club Car's industrial vehicles now sport 8 6v batteries instead of 6 8... You can not put proper energy into deep cycle trolling batteries etc.. the closest thing is a group 31. They typically are about $250...

2 Dead (by golf car standards) 6v batteries ran my salt water trolling motor for hours.

But in interest of bean counting do the math this way. You buy a good set of 8vs, Trojan. They should be around the 120-130 mark per battery. That is $720. They should last you on your car 3-5 years, and honestly Club Car usually hits close to 5 years.

4 12vs will go out every 13-14 months. They can't last under the stress of a golf car draw. So in 5 years you will almost put those batts in 5 times. 5 x 200.... You have spent more on those then the others. Not to mention your run time will be in minutes not hours. Further, weak voltage and weak amps damages electrical components.
~~

Do what you will, but the cost of being cheap sometimes is expensive.

Good points phase. Also, when adding that some EZGO and Club Car 48 volts use 4 - 12 volts, they ARE NOT a standard 12 volt marine or deep cycle battery as our freind here originally used in his cost comparison
