HD Spring Upgrade - Now Bracket Hits Wheel
I recently made some upgrades to my 2013 CC Precedent. One of those was an upgrade to HD Leaf Springs because it is recommended when there is a rear seat. The Install went relatively well - needed some use of the convincer but over all it went quite well.
I was ready to take my cart back to camp and took a short ride down the driveway only to hear grinding coming from the rear wheels. Returned to the garage to examine the issue and found that the bottom bracket under the leaf spring that the U-Bolt goes through as well as the brake cable is connected to was rubbing against the wheel. I am not sure what I should do. I'm sure this must have happened to others. |

Re: HD Spring Upgrade - Now Bracket Hits Wheel
Nobody responded to this so far...so I took it upon myself to do what I thought would work. Seeing that the wheel moves as one with the rear axle the only thing I could think of was to grind down the "ears" of the slot made for the brake cable. I didn't have a lot to grind, maybe 3/8". I did that on both sides and took the cart for a short spin...No more Grinding....It should be fine...

Too bad no one had an answer but I haven't heard if anyone having that problem. Plus I have no experience with Club Cars. Did the bracket have that much extra metal that it will hold up now?

Re: HD Spring Upgrade - Now Bracket Hits Wheel
There is a "lock nut" to hold it to the bracket slot. The Slot is like a big "C" and I did not touch the space where that nut is tightened to the bracket. I probably left 1/16" to 1/8" of that "C" so nothing was compromised. there is plenty of meat left to hold the brake cable in place.

Re: HD Spring Upgrade - Now Bracket Hits Wheel
I'm trying to figure out how best to explain it. That plate that holds the brake cable needs to be twisted tight as possible against the leaf spring. The long vertical bolts that go through the top and bottom plates have to be tight against the sides of the leaf stack. Might have to loosen the brake cable adjustment to get it in place. In your pictures there seems to be a fair bit of daylight between those bolts and the spring stack.

Re: HD Spring Upgrade - Now Bracket Hits Wheel
I can assure you that there is no daylight between the bracket and the leaf spring. I tightened those U-Bolts to the best I could. I didn't torque them...but I can assure you they are tight.
I got the cart back to the campground rode around and the brakes worked fine and there was no grinding. I will check the to make sure they are tight...Do you know what the U-Bolt should be torqued at ??? Thanks. |

Re: HD Spring Upgrade - Now Bracket Hits Wheel
I'm not suggesting the plates are loose top to bottom. What I'm saying is that bottom plate that holds the brake cable needs to be turned side to side. If those through bolts that run top plate to bottom plate were to be loosened, then turn the plates just a little to bring the cable bracket part just a little tighter in toward the center of the cart, then the bolts retightened, it would open up a little space there at the wheels. I've always looked at it as twisting those upper and lower plates till the through bolts are as tight as possible to the spring stack. If there's a noticeable gap there, the plates aren't turned in tight enough.

Re: HD Spring Upgrade - Now Bracket Hits Wheel
Both photos the OP posted appear to show a fair amount of gap between the bolt and the side of the spring stack. If both top and bottom plates are not welded to something then that would be the cure.

What meimk said. Loosen the plate, then rotate it so that the ubolt is tight against the side of the spring, then tighten it up. There should be no space between the spring and the ubolt.
