Default Advise on upgrading to 700a FSIP controller 0-5k

Hey guys-

This will be my first post here, so I want to thank you all for having me.

I've been researching the 700a FSIP controller (0-5k) for my 1995 Club Car DS. I just replaced the stock motor a couple of weeks ago with a D&D 170-011-0002. The cart is stock besides the motor and 4awg cables throughout. I am seeing 25-26mph with just the motor alone, but at the cost of some torque. I would like to know if this controller would mate up nicely with this motor, and what type of gains I should see.(more torque, and possibly more top end?). I realize I will need to upgrade the solenoid and F/R switch when I install the new controller. Let me know what you guys think!

Best,
Sean Gregg

Look into alltrax. More adjustable. And you’ll need 2awg if you go above 500 amp.

Thanks for the quick replies!

A certain well-known performance cart parts supplier (not sure if we can cite website names here??) told me that the gains on the FSIP 700a paired with my particular high-speed D&D motor are significant, and that the motor alone is not enough. Said they had customer reports of around 35mph top speed, and torque to pull 4 passengers up a hill. Does that sound like a realistic claim? I know being able to send more amperage to a high performance motor would most definitely increase the torque, but have not really found any info on whether or not replacing a stock controller with an upgraded/performance controller will give me more top speed than what I already gained from installing the D&D motor with the stock controller still in place. Any info, and advise is much appreciated!! This is my first golf cart, but I've been building/modding Corvette Z06's in my garage for ages. I'm not as knowledgeable on the electric vehicle dynamics yet, but having fun learning!

Best,
Sean Gregg

Hey Sean.... Go here https://alltraxinc.com/sr-series/ and read up on what these can do for you and all the functions available. And I am betting even with all this, they are still substantially less than your FSIP. They range from 300 to 600 amps in the SR line (series motors)

Here we go again with the automatic, go get an Alltrax. We are talking about a Series Controller here and Alltrax doesn't do anything different than the FSIP 700Amp Controller other than have less Amp output. As far as I know there isn't a controller available for a Series Cart that has built in Field Shortening.

That aside, the FSIP does have 2 adjustments that are important:

One is CL (Current Limit) which when adjusting the Potentiometer can be set from 350A (turned all the way Counter Clock Wise) or 700A (turned all the way Clock Wise). Plus the adjustments in between.

The other is CA (Controlled Acceleration) which when turned all the way Counter Clock Wise is a 5 second Acceleration curve and when turned all the way Clock Wise results in a .5 second Acceleration curve.

While the Alltrax Models may be more user friendly and configurable, they won't give you any more performance than the FSIP.

Thanks, Radelon. That was very informative. I'm ok with fine-tuning the controller settings manually with a screwdriver, as opposed to hooking up a computer and mapping various curves. Might actually prefer the simplicity of it as well.

As far as performance gains... with the 11.1hp(peak) D&D motor 170-011-0002 already installed, and on stock controller, I am seeing 25-26mph on flat long roads, with a slight decrease in torque at the very bottom end. Do you typically gain any more top speed when moving up to the 700 FSIP(any supporting HD parts), or will I only see an increase in TQ? This is where I haven't really seen any before/after tests conducted similar to my situation. Thanks again, Radelon. Very good community here!

Sean,

You could look at it this way....

Speed = voltage, gearing, tire diameter etc.
Power = the amount of amps you throw at it.

Your top speed isn’t going to increase much with a higher amp setup unless you’re not currently getting enough power to bring your motor to its full speed. What you do get with a higher amp system is the ability to get there faster and hold it better on the inclines.

I guess the real question is, what is your current controller?

-rotational speed is proportional to voltage applied
-torque is proportional to current pulled (Amps)

So in theory, unless you change your input voltage, or gear ratio (by tire size or differential), then your top speed shouldn't change.

Now, allowing more amps to flow will allow the motor to receive more "power" enabling more load to be applied, so more torque/towing power.

The only instance when the controller could help speed is if the current controller/wiring/forward reverse switch/solenoid configuration has a weak link. With this scenario the system is actually limiting it's own performance. If the weak link is the controller, then a speed increase is possible if upgraded.

Ex: If your cart motor is asking for 350amps just to pull the weight of itself and it's cargo at top speed but your system is only allowing 250amps then your top speed cannot be reached. Or about 70% capability. Thus leaving 30% untapped. Although not directly proportional that's 30% unused so a 30% gain would result in around 33mph. Like I said though, this isn't perfect.

Thanks for clarifying Redbeard. Appreciate it. Once my cart gets moving it accelerates decently until about 23ish mph, at which point it slowly starts creeping into the 24-25mph range, and on a loooong road I have seen 27. I believe my stock controller is only a 225 amp from Curtis. This would lead me to believe, going off your input, that it's very likely my motor is not being fed enough amps to reach its maximum rpm. I wonder how much amperage my new motor (170-011-0002) could pull under full load? Is a 700a controller overkill?

Thanks,
Sean Gregg
