Default Speed Sensor issues

I have a 2003 DS, and I am having speed sensor issues.

When I bought the cart, the controller was toast. I bought a used controller from a guy that I trust. It was tested before I got it, and all was good.

It fixed the cart (made it actually work) but the speed sensor wasnt working.

So... I grabbed one from amazon, slapped it in. NO GO.

well, I have done as many tests as I can come up with, even rented the curtis 'computer' to see what is going on. I have no output from the speed sensor at all.

At this point I figure, well maybe I got a bad sensor (yanno, since I am cheap). And I found a different vendor on ebay, and got another....

Put it in today - same deal....

What gives? Is it really possible that I got 2 DOA sensors from amazon (yes, I know a $30 sensor may not last as long as a $130.... but it should work out of the box right??)

Before I shell out the big $$ on another sensor... Is there anything else I should check?

As best I can tell, the magnet is good? (see attached pic).

Where can I get a stock magnet? I want (read NEED as my kids use the cart around the yard, and I have a decent hill) my regen braking to work, and the speed controller I have has already been bumped up in speed, so I dont need any increase.

Looking for ideas!

mike

The speed sensor requires power (15 volts) and ground supplied by the controller to produce an output signal. You should have three wires leading from the controller to the sensor. If any of the three wires is broken or does not make a good connection through the connectors, you will not get a signal input to the controller. I believe the wires are red (power on pin 15 of the controller), green (signal on pin 14 of the controller) and black (ground on pin 13). If power and ground are present, you should get a signal that varies between zero and 5 volts on the green wire when the wheels are turning.

I have 15v on the red, I have confirmed ground on the black. I get nothing from the green.

I am suspecting a bad magnet maybe? I dont see how I could have 2 bad sensors in a row.

Your magnet is cracked I bet. And the green will only give voltage output upon rotations.

A cracked magnet will not cause this problem a missing magnet would, take a small 5K resistor hook it to the red and green wires and try that.

Interesting thing to note....

Today I got my zero turn stuck in part of the yard, so the boys came to the rescue with this cart. After tugging me out, they claim that the speed sensor worked. when I tried to test drive it 20 min later, it did not again?

Is it possible the magnet is pushed too far in on the shaft? and its just not close enough to the sensor? It does seem that every once in a while it works just fine (very rare)
